hey,
I want to put a TT 1.8t in my 83 golf GTI, i wondered what parts i would need like:
Hubs
Driveshafts
Gearbox
any others
if anybody has done this conversion, it would be a great help to me if you could tell me how hard you found it.

I fitted an AGU engine in mine I will try to list what parts I fitted
Front original engine mount
Mk4 drivers side mount with home made adapter plate
Home made passenger mount and rear mount
Audi A3 02J gearbox and selector
Scirrocco mk2 driveshafts (bigger diameter and ends fit on gearbox)
Hydraulic clutch for 02j box fabbed to fit mk1 pedal and pipework modded for master cylinder
16v servo and master cylinder
Audi 80 brake fluid reservoir
16v radiator with thin kenlowe fan
custom rad pipework
Pace front mount intercooler
Homemade I/C pipework and exhaust manifold and downpipe.
If I can think of anything else I will let you know or if you need any information please feel free to ask me Im no expert but I might be able to save you some time and money.

So you didn't have to change the hubs then? someone told me you have to change the dash for the clocks aswell, did you have to?
Also i dont know what brakes and suspension to use.

wheel hubs should be a direct fit but I machined the drivers side cv joint as it rubbed slightly on the hub.
depending which engine management you use will depend weather the original dash can work I use DTA and you can wire the rev counter up and if you swop the electronic pick up in the gearbox for a gear type Eg mk2 golf one then the speedo will work.
Ive fitted 280 mm brakes up front with 16v servo and master cylinder and goodridge braided hoses throughout.
On the back ive fitted mk2 rear discs.
The suspension is Weitec uprated and lowered suspension

What HP was the engine u put in coz ill prob go for a 225
also, when u mounted the engine, did u have to weld or anything? Did u find i hard to do?
another thing, what was the total cost when u finished?

I think in its current state it should have nearly 300hp. I welded part of the engine mount bracket on top of the drivers side chassis leg and made brackets for the gearbox and rear mount .
I wouldnt attempt this conversion on my own and Ive got some good mates who have helped me with it.
I helped a mate when we did his mk1 quattro conversion but mostly its just a case of taking your time and I dd mine as I went along but its not really the best way if your on a budget as I must have spent nearly 15 grand on it

I have just done the same conversion BAM engine but I have used a 16v gearbox as opposed to the cable change one. If I were you, I would buy the plug and play kit from QPE its a little costly but well worth it in the long run as if you put the wiring loom from the tt in you will have so many sensors that are not hooked up to anything your ecu will keep going into limp mode as it will think you have an intermittent problem. With this kit, you can also use all your original clocks and dials. I fabricated a new engine mount for mine its personal taste but the tt one looks out of place in the mk1, I can make you one up if you send me your mount from the golf. You also have to use a golf 16v cam belt tensioner but remeber to space it correctly. Also remember to change the water pump as they a notorious for being weak before you drop the engine in.
