Speedo issues, temp and loss of patience.

its not working...

yet another issue… The speedo doesnt work in the Cabrio now it has a mk2 16kr and 020 box ?? i bought a new cable and drive gear (Red and have read the colour of this doesnt matter ?) fitted it all up the drive gear clipped on fine and it turns the cable, the cable clipped into the back of the dash firmly drove it up the road and nothing :ocf_emoticons__BangHead::ocf_emoticons__BangHead:This car is really getting to me now, had it tuned on a rolling road so it goes like stink but on first start up it hunts which gradually gets worse, its yet to stall but its bad, if i drive a short distance, about a mile, then turn it off and start again its fine with no hunting ?

The temp gauge still just climbs up and over on on its own regardless of engine temp :ocf_emoticons__BangHead:Can anyone recommend a golf friendly garage, enthusiast, exorcist in the South East that i could perhaps give the car too as i'm likely to set light to it at this rate, my Fiance currently hates me as "i've wrecked her car"

its bad and i need to get it sorted, i really need some help but no idea where to turn…….:o

the speedo gear colour is matched to the gearbox, red is suitable for most mk2 boxes but it depends on the code.

as for the speedo not working remove the dash cluster and drive it for a short distance whilst watching the square peg in the speedo cable, does it turn?

make sure the cable is fully pushed into the gearbox its a bit fiddly! if you look at the end of the gear there is a nipple, this has to drop into a hole machined into the bottom of the gearbox casing so it can take a bit of wiggling and poking before it drops in

didnt realise about the nipple… i just fed it in and pushed it till it felt like it located on the teeth, wasnt entirely sure how it located, the one i pulled out had been worn away on the teeth almost creating a flat spot, hope i haven't chewed the new one LOL  :P

will struggle to get the silver cup thing back out, was a gti to get in, had to use a flat surface and a hammer !  :o  but will try, possibly tonight.

well i found out today that the 020 gearbox needs a longer cable than the old gearbox that was in it as stock ! the new cable puts the plastic drive about an inch deeper into the box !

got a speedo but completely toasted the dash ! Found a rectifier on the membrane that was giving spurios readings compared to a mk2 (known to be good) dash, went to maplins and got a replacement, soldered it in adn now nothing electrical on the dash works at all ! checked all the fuses and they're all ok, also my brake lights are out, seem to remember the brakelight cable being the same colour as the temp guage cable and being mis-wired initially, need to check all that out again now  :P   :P  :P

quick update, fitted a new dash cluster and all but the temp guage is working properly, a mate had his hands down the back of the engine looking at wires and the temp gauge dropped right down   thinking i had a duff wire /short / broken i set about testing checking shortening and tidying… nothing, no change, nada…

was driving it as i believe the guage is wrong but the engine temp is right and stopped at a junction and the guage dropped down to 'normal' on its own, pulled away and it rose back up to high again….

started on the wires again and nothing, then thought, what if there's an air lock in the coolant system… tried the run it up to temp without the cap on whilst massaging the hoses thing last night and the guage went down   Missus was over the moon, i said lets take it for a spin down the seafront to help build her confidence up in it, got to the end of the road and bluudy guage went up ! returned home with a very upset missus tried the bleed thing again, more air did come out but wasn't as effective as before plus it was dark, decided to leave it till today before i try again as i think it needs to heat up from cold each time, wondering if jacking the car up really awkwardly to get the expansion tank at the highest point would help ??

will do found a few threads about bleeding the system, all slightly different, some say when it boils up cap it off to prevent air getting into the system, some dont mention capping it off ? some say rev the engine then squeeze the pipe some just say squeese the pipe, i'm guessing its all much of a muchness, many say put the heater on full blast, makes me laugh, i understand opening the valve by putting the heater temp knob to hot but the fan is just the fan, although i guess it may help keep the coolant cooler for slightly longer so you can squeeze the pipes more before it boils !

yeah you want to put the cap back on or switch off the engine BEFORE it boils, otherwise you'll get more air in the system and have to start again.  reving the engien is recommended as the extra revs help the waterpump force out any air leaks, squeezing the pipes (all over the engine, not just rad hoses) also helps encourage any air bubbles out of the system.

with the heater on hot you can keep tabs on the temp of the water in the matrix, once it starts blowing good and hot you know that you have all the bubbles out of your matrix. as you say i guess it'll also help control the temperature a bit :)

well i have had about three days of uneventfull motoring in the Cabby !!

got a slight hunting issue on cold starts, but will clean up the stabiliser valve this weekend as although it buzzes with the ignition on, when the engine running pulling the loom connector off it makes no difference, the gauge is sitting just a little bit past the center line, so i'm guessing a little more air needs to be got out, but i have flushed the system through and topped up with the correct amount of coolant / anti-freeze.

Will do a little tidy up in the engine bay and then drive the heck out of it whilst i save for a respray !
