Settling In
restoration + modification
im going to restore a mk1 gti and would like to know what areas of the mk1 i sould upgrade (brakes ive heard are rubbish on the mk1). The restoration will be on a budjet so mods need to be cheap

If you're on a budget, forget about suspension mods - cheap suspension is cheap for a reason, and good non-standard suspension setups cost a lot of money.
Good mods are the really subtle ones which make it more enjoyable or desirable, for example:
* Fitting the 3 gauges in the centre console
* 9" servo and 22mm master cylinder conversion
* 14" wheels and 60 series tyres (if yours is a Campaign, it will have this already)
* Headlamp loom upgrade
* Turning the interior into a 'race look' stripped out one will cost little, because you could possibly sell your original trim and you wouldn't have to source lots of little trim bits which are no doubt broken, or missing. Also it would ever so slightly improve performance because the car would be lighter.
