Removing Trumpets

I have a VW golf 1.4i. A friend of mine has suggested that i remove the trumpets in the airbox were the air filter sits. apparently this will increase the power output of the engine.

What i am wondering is if this is a viable option and what are the pros and con's of doing this

is it a small block (1.1, 1.3) or a big block? (1.5,1.6,1.8)

Sounds like it will increase the air flow and depending on if you tune your mixture correctly, it might give you some more power, but will defianately make it louder and maybe a bit more responsive.
