Rear Brake Disc Help

The problem is when I got the car it hadb een converted to rear discs. They are vw brake callipers but I don't know what they are off? They have the number 38 stamped on them,If that's any help.

Second problem is I replaced the broken handbrake lever and now it seems if the cables are 1 inch short . Only thing I can think of is the cables are original and not for discs. Any advice welcolme.

The calipers look like normal early  mk2 golf  type, cannot guess what the cable might be from.

can you make up a spacer sleeve to make them fit

Would it not be better to fit the correct h/brake cables, assuming you have a wrong one. Guess you are aware you need scirrocco 16v cables, not the latest model. The original mk1 drum brake cables have a spring on them at the end, disc ones do not.

Calipers are mounted upside down thats why the cables are too short, cables should go above the beam with those calipers

That's what was wrong, upside down. Do you know how to slacken them off? They fit very tight and its hard to rotate the disc. The hand brake cables are not attached and the brake pipes are not on so why so much clamping?

These early calipers with the exterior spring were known for being prone to seizing, advice used to be replace with later ones, although i have no idea if this is your problem. have you tried winding the piston in.

bear in mind you will need to take the caluipers off again and hang them the other way round to bleed them, as you have now fitted them upside down to how they should be (later mk2 golf and mk3 fit the way as per your original picture with cable on the bottom, early mk2 and scirocco calipers are 36mm piston and mount with the cable on top)

you can mount them the right way up with the scirocco 16v handbrake cables, but you may have to cut 10mm off the end of the metal tubes under the car. basically cut right back to where they are are stuck to the floor pan you'll see what I mean
