power steering
Hey, Im hoping to put a 1.8 recoditioned engine in my mk1 with new cams, twin weber carbs ect. I was wondering how do i go about fitting power steering?

it used to be around ?500 and I remember a conversation I had with steve creswell of C and R he said he didn't know how TSR could do it so cheap, this was a few years back so no doubt the price has gone up since. With hourly rates what they are now I doubt it will ever be a cheep conversion unless you can figure out what they use and do it yourself.

for some odd reason people tend to keep the rack they use a secret :dontknow: If I knew I'd tell you, TSR said it was all genuine VW parts though. must be either off some later polo or similar? I think the south african citi golfs had power streering on later models, could be worth checking out as they are right hand drive.

My LHD Mk1 Cabriolet has power steering and I've seen a few sets for sale here in Holland. The system usually sells for around 350 euros but I'm not sure how easy it is (if at all) to fit to a RHD Mk1.
I think the UK conversion kits used Nissan and Rover parts if I remember correctly but there always seems to be some confusion surrounding the whole thing.

there is a lhd rack avaliable from vw, but not rhd.

There's been quite a few posts on PAS on the forums - take a butchers.
It was retro fitted to my cab before I bought her (receipt for ?1500 incl labour, so it isn't cheap!). In addition to that, since I've got my mitts on her the rack had to be removed, refurbished @ a specialist independant outfit at a cost of nearly 500 notes all told due to a bad leak. :cry:
Spares will be a bitch to come by and you'll lose a fair bit of steering feel - one of the things a mk1 is famous for!
However…
I'm bl**dy glad I've got on mine for usual day to day driving! :mrgreen:
I can pm pics and stuff when I get back tonight if they'd help but basically the power unit is from a mk3, the steering rack is from a 84 - 86 Nissan Bluebird and the mounting bracket for the rack actually involves part of the gearbox linkage… (Hence all the hassle I get with gears Dougelove!!!).
I'm not sure what the TSR or other set ups are like.

Has anyone roller bearing front suspension mounts and if you have what are they like.

It used to be ?500 just for the rack from tsr and then you would supply your own pump, hoses etc and fit it, i was in there once and asked so see the racks they sold, they wouldnt even let me view one unless i paid first!

The reason why TSR can do it so cheap is simple-it does not work properly, so you pay your money and take your chances.
The simple option is to build your upperbody strength or learn to turn the steering when when the wheels are rolling.
