Power steering for mk1 model volkswagens
Hi all
So I'm looking to understand what the interest is in from all the Mk1 golf, jetta, cab and caddy owners if you could have power steering for your mk1's.
I'm 95% come up with what could be a kit to buy, price not finalized yet - should be by the end of March 06, that will work on any mk1 golf, jetta, cab and caddy and may also provide install service as well - but not finalized pricing on this yet either - we are looking at both options for left and right hand drive.
Just wanting to get idea of who may be interested in this?
So all Mk1 golf, jetta, cab and caddy owners - tell me if you are interested, as the demard may push down the price and turn around of this.
(Please note guys I won't be giving away the details of which rack we will be using )
NOTE: The only other power steering provider for mk1's today in europe wants 1100 pounds for their kit alone, so we are aiming to try and come in at about 50-60% of that cost - or even cheaper depending on interest.
thanks
Si

interesting idea, but in my opinion, some of the charm of a mk1 is in the fact that it is so basic and you are 'at one' with the car. 8)
No powering steering for me. Thanks.

Don't want details of donor car's rack etc but any pictures of the rack and will you need to cut any part of the lip on the fire wall for clearance for the UJ joint?

Sorry, but if I was buying a kit this is one thing I'd want to know. Say in 5 years time it fails and need replacing and you're not around anymore, what would I do then? From a technical point of view I'd also want to be sure before that before I buy I'd be happy with the gearing of the steering and that the car wouln't be too light and twitchy.
But if you can do a kit for the kind of price you're aiming at I'm sure you'll get plenty of interest.
Good luck.

I mean I won't be giving the details out - but buyer of the kit will be given details of how to service or get items repaired in the future - we are looking into all options for this.
thanks

We are testing various set-ups so we don't have to cut any parts of the owners cars.

Heard rumours of a nissan bluebird rack years ago or renault clio? Not sure if any of that was true, but I like the stiff way my cab feels….
You wouldn't buy the Mona Lisa then paint on a new Jennifer aniston style hair do to bring her up to date!….Would you? 8O
People could steer them 20 years ago, they can steer them now! I appreciate your efforts and it is right that you should ask the question..Thanks…But for me originality is very very important and power steering is not for me!

Me and a mate did it using the renault clio rack but it was an untested setup in the end due to the motor getting broken for parts.
TBH if I was to do it again I'd go the electric route like the mini boys

This conversion was available from TSR at one time, maybe it still is? I believe they used the Nissan Bluebird rack but some modification of the bulkhead was needed. The mk1 was available with PAS in Europe and the US but of course that was LHD
