Polo mk3 calipers onto mk1 Golf?

Will mk3 polo calipers fit onto my mk1 golf? Wanting to fit 13" minilites on it, but can't because it catches on the existing caliper/carrier. Mk3 polo ones are easier/cheaper to source, and they look like they'll fit? Also, needed to upgrade my brakes, running a 1600 8v engine on 1.3 brakes. Thanks

Polo brake calipers have less clearance to the wheel spokes so you'd be worse off :) The mk1 golf calipers are better for clearance.

mk3 polo calipers are VWI except for the G40 which has VWII. If you have a 1.5-1.8 mk1 it has VWII calipers, if its a 1.0-1.3 (or early 1.5-1.6 ) it uses the older square pad setup.

if you have a later MK1 cabrio then they use a slightly different caliper carrier which has a big hoop over the front of the caliper, this is what causes clearance issues. you can just change it for an earlier carrier from a mk1 golf without the hoop, and retain the VWII caliper

Thanks for the reply. Where can I buy these carriers from? Can't find any online. It's strange, cause I had 13x8 ats classics offset 0 and they fitted but my 13x7 minilites with +10 offset don't fit. Thanks

look for earlier mk1 golf/cab/rocco/caddy, g40 shape polo ones also fit i beleive regardless of if they're vwi or vwii. just a case of make sure they arnt the hooped type (i beleive the g40 with VWII uses the hooped carrier)

basically, all of the above but no hoop ;)

when you're looking you usually find them still attached to the calipers, rather than on their own. e.g.:

just to be sure, do yours look like the ones on the left, or the ones on the right:

Mines the one on the Left...Smokey, do you have the ones on the right? Will they take vented discs? Cheers

its not the carriers you need to worry about with vented brakes, its the carriers :)
as long as they have VWII cast into them you're fine
