well in my opion either keep original go 2ltr16v (cheaper upgrqade) or 1.8t these are the best driveable and value for money swaps
depends how much money you got and what u use the car for

Depends what you want. VR6 would mean major engineering (ie, expensive). 2.0 16V seems best option out of your list. I've heard that big valve heads really release the power in these engines. Everyone is going 1.8 turbo nowadays though. Best route for mega-power but you'll still need help unless you're good with electrics !

i dont want 20 v turbo as everybody has it were as i already have the throttle bodies what about the non turbo 30v from the mk4 gti on throttle bodies dont know how it would go but should sound pretty nutty

2.0 16v
easy, cheap, 150 bhp standard with scope to go much further,
the conversion is almost as if the engine was designed to be put i the mk1 from factory. everything just bolts up, if ur good with mechanics u can do it urself…
bad bit? dunno if its best to go for the 8v or 16v gearbox, mines on the 8v box and seems fine.
