Please help! 2.0 16v owned for one day and won't start!

Hi all,

I'm really hoping someone can help me. I collected my mk1 Gti with a 16v conversion on tuesday night and drove it home with no issues.
Got up early wednesday keen to give it a blast on the way to work and it wouldn't even fire.
Not being mechanically minded, i'm not sure what to do. I've taken a plug out which has a spark and it smells of fuel.
theres a sensor or something near where the throttle cable joins with three cables coming out of it. These cables had either been cut or had snapped so i re-joined these hoping it would fix the problem but still won't start.

Please please could someone help as it's been a really dissapointing start to my mk1 and i've no idea what to do!!

Thanks,

Steve

check the 3 sensors on the side of the head passenger end, clean up the connections here and check non o the wires have fallen off. if that doesnt work try swap the wires round a couple o times, see if that helps.

also look around for disconnected hoses, on the 16v if its been fitted properly there will be an over-run cutoff on back of the airbox, big black/grey plastic thing. this likes to pop off and car wont start if it is!

Cheers for that, i'll check over the weekend.

I've attached a picture of the sensor that i found was disconnected.
Can anyone tell me what this does and if it would cause the car not to start?

Not sure whether to re-connect it as don't know which way round the wires go or leave it disconnected.

Don't think i'm gonna sleep till i've sorted this, gutted!

thats the idle switch, it should be connected like so:
1 - white - vacuum switch (metal thing behind airbox)
2 - black - ignition live feed
3 - black/yellow - isv control unit pin 8, ecu pin 6

Cheers again.

Spoke to previous owner who said this was never connected and always ran fine.
Will check those other bits you mentioned over the weekend and let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Had another play today and checked those bits you mentioned and all seems fine.
The car will now start but only run for about 3 - 4 seconds before dying. Sometimes it will backfire before it dies. Wish I was a mechanic, probably something really simple that I could of fixed by now!!
