Mk4 Clocks Fuel Gauge reads either reverse or too high?
So I have fitted a set of mk4 clocks to my mk1 along with the 20vt conversion, but am struggling with the fuel level that is being sent.
I am sure I have read about someone having a similar issue and I know that others have used a set of mk4 clocks in their mk1 so there must be a solution. Basically the gauge works okay, when you turn the ignition on it rises right to full when I know for a fact there is very little petrol in the tank. This makes me think it is either reading reverse? (Swap the wires on the sender around maybe?) Or it needs a resistor to get it to read the right level.
Like I said I am sure I have read about it somewhere, but I have read a lot of stuff on here and various other Golf forums so any advice would be great!
Cheers,
Joe

swapping the wires wouldnt help as its a resistance reading, what you might have to do is find a way to bolt a mk4 tank level pcb to your mk1 sender unit. you can buy these on their own so they do come off

Cheers for that mate.
I found the thread where I read about it on Vortex. Basically it's a common fault when using new clocks, the solution is to take the mk1 sender apart and swap the resistance track around. (for anyone else struggling with this)
I'll give it a go tomorrow and report back.

Nope still reads backwards, I had a look at swapping/modifying the sender a while ago, but it wasn't too simple. I will be sorting it soon though so I will update.

"Yes the fuel gauge was a odd stroke of luck and working!
Used a mk4 guage unit with a mk1 float on it mounted in the same place OEM, bent in the pattern & then adaption altered in the dashpod
even though when the tank is full it shows about 3/4 when you read the data via VCDS it shows 45-48 Litres and when you put couple litres in from dry it shows just off that amount!!
I could never get it that close if I done another 20 times"
this is how he did it.
