Mk1 gti 2.0l 8v conversion

Hi, i've tried doing a search and have found a good amount of information but i could do with a bit more. |A friend of mine wants me to finish off his 8v conversion as the guy that was doing it got fed up and wouldn't finish it. Any way its got a 2.0l 8v bottom end from a mk3 golf gti with the original mk1 head. The engine is in the car but the guy left the mk3 gearbox on and apparently it can't be used. So anyway what i need to know is, When i put the mk1 gearbox on will i need the mk1 flywheel? Also which crank shaft pulley should i use? The guy reckons neither can be used, is this right? He also keeps asking me whether the downpipe will fit but i don't know because i haven't looked at it yet, will i encounter any problems there? He has given me a kit for blanking off the breather and an adapter ring for the dizzy, do i need to use the cog off the 2.0l dizzy? Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm going to be doing this conversion very soon, I can't help with the gearbox info but the exhaust on some cars catches due to the block being 16mm or so taller. If you are using a standard GTI manifold and down pipe, you can make a spacer up using the downpipe gasget as a template. And you do have to use the 2.0l drive gear for the MK1 dizzy. :)

and you basically need to use flywheel/clutch assy to suit the gearbox

Thanks for the reply. I just went out after i made this topic to see if i could figure it out. I've put the mk1 box on and just left the mk3 flywheel on and it fits ok, put the mk3 dizzy cog on and fitted that and fitted the blanking kit. When i got the car the lad was saying that the person who was originally doing the conversion said the bottom pulleys are different and that some holes would need drilling in the mk1 pulley to make it fit but i got it on fine, sits out a little further than the water pump and alternator pulleys but not too bad and the belt seems to go round without wanting to come off. I haven't tried the downpipe yet but i can have a spacer made up no probs if i need to, thanks for the info on that. I just need to fit the driveshafts and try and figure out where all the wires and pipes go and hopefully it'll be sorted. I may be posting some pics up if i don't know where something goes etc
