You will need a 17mm sump plug socket like this

(can be aquired for about a tenner off ebay as part of a set), and a funnel as the plug is parralell to the floor  :dontknow:

You undo this plug here as illustrated on my cabby engine which is not in a vehicle.

You can see the gear linkage and diff/drive shaft hole in this pic so should be able to work out the position from that :) its near the gearbox mount opposite the clutch lever

Im assuming you've drained the transmission oil? Make sure you fill it with TRANSMISSION oil. You will need 1.5 litres for a 4 speed manual box or 3 litres for a 5 speed. If its automatic its different affair altogether.

If its pre-1982 5 speed gearbox, ironically the filler/level plug is in the wrong place, and it needs something like 0.75 more litres once it starts flowing out of the hole. The easiest way is to jack one side of the car up; or remove the speedo cable and fill from there.

The gearbox code includes a date code which you can decipher so you know if yours is one that needs the above.

Yeah probs a good idea to check the code cos it might not be the original 83 box. Might have been replaced with another one

Gents, just had my 5 speed gearbox overhauled by a well respect gearbox shop.

I was advised, and I have, to use 10/40 part synthetic engine oil. Normal transmission oil will deteriorate over time, particularly on low mileage cars.

Make sure the gearbox is empty, don't use the normal filler plug, pour it in via the speed cable hole, it will go in a lot easier.

Also, I am not sure where the 3 litres comes from for a 5 speed box, I have used 2 litres plus an extra 0.25 litre, total 2.25 litres, to ensure that the 5th gear mechanism gets lubricated.

There is no danger putting this extra 0.25 litres as the gearbox is vented. Black cap on top of gearbox.

Yeah my bad should say 2 litres not 3. Must have pressed wrong button. The figures are from the Haynes capacity section. I would say check the halfords books but to be fair half the time Halfords cant get ur parts right so probs not worth the risk :/
