mk1 golf engine change, from a 1.3 to a 1.6 gti lump
hi, ive recently found a rock solid mk1 golf 1.3 c. the body is rock solid and the only problem is that the head gasket has gone. i dont wanna do anything to crazy in the engine bay cause i plan to use the car most days. just want something with a little more power, thats why i plan to put a standard 1.6 gti engine in ive managed to find. im just after some info on the swap if any one can help, mainly if the engine mounts are the same??, are the drive shafts the same size or do i need to change the hubs??, is the radiator the same??, etc etc etc, any advice would be great.
cheers all

if i was you i wouldn't bother mate….. you need to change the mounts the petrol tank and alot of other stuff the car will be worth less when its done and be more expensive to insure just fix the head gasket and get a 5 speed polo box so its nicer to drive on motorways and it will make a lovely daily! hope that helps fella

yep, gearbox, selector rods, exhaust, engine wiring, fuel pump and wiring the list goes on and on.
It's easier to list whats the same.
And then as mentioned not worth as much as an orginal GTI and insurance compnay will kick you in the knackers for having a modified car.
It is possible given enough effort by only way this is really feasible (unless spannering is your hobby) if you had a perfect 11/1300 shell and a rotten GTI with perfect mechanicals.

the shell is perfect, and ive got a complete engine, gearbox, driveshafts, pritty much everything apart from fuel pump.
do the engine mounts have to be changed drasticly????. are the driveshafts the same size on all mk1's???? i.e would i need to change the hubs as well????
thanks for input so far, its making me more aware of what im getting into.

the left hand side mount has to be cut out and one from a scrap gti or bigblock welded in, i think the others need to be changed, if you have the gti fuel tank, and your engine and gearbox is in good condition, why not sell the gti lump and buy a g40 and 5 speed box, apart from the fuel tank change it would be a straight swap(near enough)

Yes mate, its a big change…
Loads to do, fuel tank, pump, lines, drive shafts, gearbox, steering rack (to allow 5 gear linkage) the whole engine, bigger rad, move engine mounts on chassis leg doesnt matter how far you have to move them they still need moving, then there's teh brakes, a 1.3 brakes with a GTI lump in it is it a no no, so then there will be the upgrade to GTI brakes…
So, moral is, If you want a GTI you'd be better of getting one with a tired engine and using the one you got, then sellthe 1.3 on..
The smallblocks great, with a few subtle mods its quick enough, I've recently sold my 83 1.8GTI and have only the 1.3 Cl 5dr, which i love and untill the engine goes boom, its staying..
