Mk1 g60 Starter motor
Hi, finally dragged the golf from the back of the workshop to see if I can finish it. I've got a spark and fuel, I think the timing is right. It does crank over but seems laboured, at the moment ive got the 1.6 mk1 golf starter on it. What starter should I be using? I've got a mk2 16v gearbox on it. Any ideas welcome, I can't think of any other reasons why it won't fire.
thanks

the mk1 starter should be ok, the g60 has lower compression so it'll be too good if anything
if its cranking slowly then its either a bust starter, bad battery cabling or there is something up with the engine making it too hard to crank over.
diesel and 16v mk2 starters are uprated, as are all mk3 1.8-2.0 8v units. but as i say there should be no need

Yeah was a dodgy starter, brought a 1.1KW one to fit. Fired her up, still a long way to go but not bad considering i've never had the engine firing and not touched it for 3-4yrs. Just gotta figure out why the starter cranks as soon as I connect the bat live, any ideas?

sounds like the black/red trigger wire is shorted to live somewhere, need to investigate your wiring and the ignition switch.
make sure nothign is sorted out at the starter from the main stud to the spade
