mk1 brakes, scirrocco callipers and 280mm discs

well basically as title says ive got a set of scirroco callipers, 280mm g60 discs and adaptor brackets for my mk1. problem is something doesnt seem right and when there all bolted up theres only space to get 1 pad in??? :banghead:

im not sure if its something obvious im doing wrong or if this combination of scrap doesnt actually work together?

if anyone has this set up or any pics of it fitted this would be great as it seams like one step forward, 10 back as usual!!

Assuming the scirrocco calipers are the same as golf ones then i think the problem may be the pads, had the same problem myself.

Pass, but when I bought them I was offered 2 thicknesses of pads and bought the thin ones to hopefully avoid this problem??

could be you have 256mm calipers, these are thinner than 280. if so you need 256mm pads and grind the sliders down so they fit. better to just get the right calipers in the first place. can you measure the opening on them?

There 45mm between faces, off the car the pads fit the disc fine, I think the problem is the bracket. Should it fit we're the calliper mounts normally or mount on the rear??

i found this thread that mentions 53mm for 256mm, and 61mm for 280s:

if yours are narrower than 53mm then by the sounds of it you have 256mm solid disc calipers, no wonder they dont fit!

So what mk1 callipers do I need? Would mk1 gti callipers work?

ah sorry ive re-read you bought scirocco calipers, so 256? if so, you need part worn 256mm pads and you also have to grind the sliders to make them fit over g60 discs.

easier way is get g60 calipers, or mk3 pre-96 gti/16v/vr6, or high spec passat, corrado, seat ibiza, toledo, cordoba etc. basically any vw or seat with 280mm brakes

Ive looked at this AGAIN today and there's no way on this planet of making those callipers fit with 280mm discs and the adaptor brackets they came with. I bought them in good faith of someone on here, I've sent them a message, after a few days if I hear nothing il name and shame as its one thing stitching me up, it's another ignoring me!!

So rant over what car has the correct callipers on I need, I'm just gonna go and buy some, ideally that will work with the brackets I have (they have the same bolt spacing as a standard mk1 just further out)

Need to no exactly as I'm fairly sure guy in motor factors won't have a clue

If you have the g60 brackets just get some g60 callipers and pads with disc's job done you can pick them up cheap enough its what i did

mk3 gti/16v/vr6 prob easiest to get from the scrap yard, they're really common in there. just make sure they're pre-96 with 280mm brakes rather than the later 288. easy to tell the difference by looking at them.

288 on the left, 280 on the right:

it seems to me that you potentially have the later vr6 288mm calipers. I was sold some under the pretence they were G60 calipers. They fitted onto the car with the adaptor brackets but the inside pad clashed with adaptor. If you chop some off the pad they will fit but it is a total bodge really. Far better to get calibra turbo or similar as they fit without adaptor brackets, thus removing the risk of the bolts coming loose (a not uncommon problem) and they are spot on, that is what I went for. Note if you do, you need M12 shoulder bolts with an M10 thrad. I think the shoulder bolts come with two different lengths of shoulder. I think it is about 20mm the one you need. It is obvious once you have the carriers in your hand, as the shoulder required is the thickness of the bolt hole in the carrier. The bolts cost me about a fiver. Calipers aren't pricey either.
