right you need to leave everything on the block, as you need it all.  remove the A/C compressor tho obviously if one fitted. the clutch is no good so need to unbolt the lot and bin it, and the 02a starter wont fit either so sell that on.

you'll need to swap the alternator setup for the earlier spring loaded type from a MK3 1.8-2.0 8b, as the ABF setup with the seperate tensioner will catch the chassis.  To fit it all you need is the bracket, spring and alternator from the donor car, it'll bolt straight onto the ABF block.  Oh and obv need the matching belt :)

If it has A/C you also need a non-A/C waterpump pulley, from a 1.8-2.0 8v or 16v MK3.  Oh and you can unbolt all the PAS setup, as I guess you wont be fitting that :)

Theres a bracket on driver side of the block, 2 13mm bolts & a nut.  The pas bracket itself is held on with 2 13mm bolts vertically screwed into the block, and theres 1 more 13mm bolt that goes into/thru the alternator bracket.

heres 2 pics of the spring loaded type, and you can see the last PAS bolt I mean towards the bottom:

With slight clearancing of the chassis rail using a ball pein hammer the abf alternator/belt/pulleys and the power steering assy all fits nicely. the black piece that looks as if its hitting the chassis rail is actually above it.

cheers for that….great help

Will have a gander when i get home…

I think you'd need to remove the power steering pump, if you let them spin dry then they don't get lubricated properly internally and risk seizing up.

yep they dont like running dry. if you're captain lazy just cut the pas belt off

How much harder is it to run the ABF on digital fuel injection compared to mechanical fuel injection?

Post

basically, if you can read wiring diagrams and can solder, use the abf injection. if not, go k-jet!

either will go on without any major hassles, just that abf managment requires more wiring skill.

Is this because the ABF+stock AC compressor won't fit in a Mk1 engine bay?

I'm wanting to drop in an ABF and run AirCon (its almost summer in Australia :ouch: !).
Will an ABF with stock AC compressor fit in a Mk1 engine bay?

Alternatively I have a couple of Mk1 AC compressors, will the alternator/AC bracket from a Mk1/2 bolt onto the ABF block? Would a Mk2 alternator generate enough power for an ABF EFI setup?

the A/C pulley setup does clash with the chassis leg slightly, but this can be fixed by a few strategically placed hammer blows.  The thing that catches is the tensioner wheel arm, it hits the leg ever so slightly.  You may even be able to grind the arm down a bit to suit?

its a case of suck it & see.

if you want to fit an earlier A/C setup you need to find a 16v setup from a MK2 or Passat, 8v bits wont fit the 16v block.

So if the stock AC is unworkable (clashes to badly) and I have to remove it, does that mean I have to change anything else?

E.g. Does the AC have its own belt? Does it run independent of alternator/water pump/PAS?

Struggling to find pics of a stock engine bay!

you'll have to remove everything, alternator, brackets, waterpump, crank pullies etc etc and replace the lot with the equivilant setup from an earlier 16v.

you should be able to get away with a tap to the chassis leg though, its not a massive clash it just rubs a bit, takes a bit of the paint off and makes a noise.

Mate of mine got his abf out of a scirocco that had been on the road for ages, only a slight dent plus missing paint.
