Mk1 1.3 5speed
Hi Folks,
Does anyone know what 5 speed gearbox code will fit a 60 bhp Mk1 Golf driver, and any pitfalls associated with the conversion ?
Thanks
David

Currently doing this conversion myself. The gearbox I have is an 8p gearbox from a mk2 1.3 Polo. It will bolt straight on to the engine and driveshafts, starter motor etc. The rear mount will need a little bit grinding out of it and the main left hand mount will need major surgery. You will need the main left hand mount from a Polo and cut it down (cut the tower off it) and you will need to cut up the original 4 speed mount and weld the two together. I will be doing my left hand mount tomorrow so I shall take some photos. In terms of linkage then you will need to remove the rubber/plastic sides inside the gear stick console, thus allowing more room for the stick to move. Then a little fine tuning.
There has been talk of needing to drop down gears in to fourth to keep the speed up but I cant confirm this as mine is not finished yet and they may have been talking about a 1100cc with less power?
Pretty sure any small block (1.0 - 1.4) Polo gearbox will fit up to about year 2002. If it has gear change cables that run to the rear of the box then no worries as these can be removed and use the shaft that's left.

Hi Mate,
Thanks for the advice, good luck with the mountings and I look forward to hearing how the final conversion works, and any further advice or pics.
Thanks again
