Polo GT or 1.4 ABD with GT injection system is a good setup without too much mechanical hassle.

If you got a good 1600 available for the right money I would go for that - reputed to be a very smoooth and rev happy engine.
Not worth spending time and money on going faster until you have experienced and got used to a 1600 which I am assuming from your post that you haven't.
I am sure it will raise a smile as it will offer good performance.

originaly it was a 1500 ls i think thats what he said when i got the car. it has had a 1600 in lately, but its out now was thinking 2.0 16v or staying with the 1600 gti from a mk1

Im assumoing if it was a 1500 the engine mount will be in place for a 16v, the simple solution would be to get a 1600 on twin webbers, but then if this is a daily driver the fuel costs would be quite high.
for outright performance you cant go wrong with a 2L 16v 8)

It fits nicely and if you make some effort using non standard parts to crate more room than there is deffo no problem sloting it in
I'v used corsa diesel rad that fits under slam panel and fans are scorpio cosworth twin jobie which is well slim
Need extra room as i will be going throttle bodies route as soon as engine is run
The only clearance issue i'v got is gearbox to lower brace, but it is bigger cable change box

Oh yea, wiring loom…
I'v used complete wiring from a corrado including fuse box which i'v relocated to driver side
But if you got 1.8 gti to start with it is not complicated to addapt
