G60 Information.

Does anyone have enough knowledge of ECU modifications to anwer a query please? Have a 1990 Corrado G60 engined Mk1 Golf.

Currently have an ECU with a`JABBA CHIPS`power chip fitted but have been asked to fit a `POWER CHIPS` unit with the number 022E6 on , the Jabba chip has only their telephone number shown.

Can anyone tell me if one is `better` than the other, the owner maintains the Mk1 ran badly with the Jabba unit but that could be because a hundred and one faults existed feeding bad information to the ECU or even mechanical faults contributed to the rough running. All of these issues will be addressed before engine is used but if there is a clear benefit between these two units I would like to know please.

Any informed answer will be appreciated.

Well that might be a custom Jabba chip and not one of their off the shelf chips - the chip is fitted with a smaller pulley and gives about a 20-30bhp gain over the standard by spinning  the charger faster, the chip ensures that more fuel is delivered for the higher boost.

Jabba have a piggy back unit that they plug into the ECU's EPROM (chip) slot. From this they can map for ignition and fuelling by altering the existing the VW maps - it is not an exact science as not all areas of the EPROM are fully understood. Once the map is sorted a new EPROM is "blown" and fitted back into the ECU.

So to be honest neither is better than the other - it really depends what maps are on them and whether you have a smaller pulley fitted - 78mm is standard, I use to run a 68mm one, some run smaller but the charger then needs much shorter service intervals and is spun faster than it should be.

I would take it to Jabba and get a rolling road mapping setup to get the best setup for your engine.

Cheers,
Ade

Many thanks Ade, my initial feeling was that the Jabba chip was likely `customised` to whatever they had done to the rest of the engine and, to be honest, I have never heard anyone complain about work done by Jabba.  Why the owner didn't go back and discuss any issues he had is quite beyond me!

Obviously a man with money, he went out and bought this Power chips version without reference to common sense (sense really isn't that common I'm afraid!).

Again, thanks, this really is a helpful crew! Pete.

G60 power, doing it with style!

As an addendum to my last message, found out that Jabba have never supplied a chip to the last owner.
Have now learned that all modifications were made by G-Werks, supercharger is still running a standard 78mm pulley so the need for a ECU power chip seems a bit questionable. The wiring harness modifications are very, very poor, unlikely that a company such as G-Werks would have done that.

So you just need a standard chip.

Chip and pulley is a good investment though, and fairly off the shelf if you buy from Jabba.
However, I would have the charger refurbed first so that you have a known baseline to work from.

Ade
