Fitting Mk4 Gearbox on Mk1 Golf?
Are the physical mounting points the same for both gearboxes?
Thanks, appr whatever suggestions you guys have?

Also, the 6 speed golfs had at least 110bhp, and about the same torque - chances are a mk1 will never pull a 6-speed as well, if at all.
The only aftermarket gearboxes I've seen fitted to a mk1 is the 5-speed from a polo 1.4, but if your car has a 5 speed already, there's no point.

I used the mounts from Just Caddys
http://www.justcaddys.com/fabricated-products.html
You need the 100mm cups for the box and the 100mm shafts and cv's with the compatible hubs.
I also converted to an hydraulic clutch by using a pedal box from the guy on the edition 38 forum. Some mount a clutch master cylinder directly through the bulkhead and make a bracket to attach it to the pedal. Others use the cable conversion kits that were standard on some Seat's of the same era.
For the cable shift I cut a larger hole in the floor and mounted it under the car so that it looks standard from the inside. The cables were then routed under the tunnel into the engine bay. I used Lupo GTI cables as they are just the right length - rare but can still be had new from VW. Some guys mount on top of the tunnel and cut holes in the bulkhead.
I have also added a quick shift kit from Diesel Geeks.

which is fine for the 02A/02J boxes.
but if his 6spd box is 02M, then none of the above will work.
all custom stuff that you will need to find someone to make up for you, none of it will be cheap.

That's what I was headed for - my six speed box is 02M on my Bora.
It's not impossible, but I think the effort outweighs the benefits :dontknow:

I was not overly set on the 6 speed, but the cable shift for me is highly desirable as it gives a much more slick action. I have replaced all of the bushes and rod ends, selector ball etc but still the stick is sloppy and change is notchy!
I'll see if I can hold of a Polo 1.4 box and shift mechanism instead!
Thanks and have a great Christmas all!
