Fitting issues with mk2 GTi seats
I bought some mk2 GTi front seats off a local guy thru ebay for ?15. They are the non-striped ones in black and grey. They're cleanish too, no rips or holes and with fairly good bolsters all round for their age.
They went in with no problems, only the handle for the forward movement adjustment is on the wrong side and the seats are not adjustable. Anyone know how to sort this out?
I was amazed it was only one bolt to remove to get the seat out! so simple. But does the seat adjust bolt carry the full load of the seat and driver in the event of a crash - Seems pretty small and flimsy?
I'll post a pic tomorrow - i'm very pleased with the change!

Thanks Mark, might have to leave it unadjustable then. Now i just have to either fit the old seatbelt posts from the mk1 seats, or get new mk2 seatbelt clips……hmmm..
Anyway here's the before and after !!!
Not bad eh!

Whoa - very sharp. Been looking for mint original seats for my Golf C, but hard to find. Might have to go Mk2 route.

Thanks
I think mk2 seats are the easy option, i was looking into mk1 gti seats and they are pretty expensive. I mean ?15 for mk2 gti seats - you can't argue with a bargain like that!

The fronts sit about an inch or so higher than the mk1's - even with the drivers sunk right down. but i'm still happy.
What mods are required to fit the rear bench? is it straight forward or not - i've heard its very fiddly. . .?

Cheers, think these must be them. They do look mint, and I got very excited till girlfriend pointed out they are the wrong colour  (mine are blue trimmed, these are black). Would have done Greg though.

markone, i guess you need folding seats - were all 'c's 3dr? if not i know someone who was selling a mint set of blue gl seats. Apparently they did 30k miles and were removed from the car and have been in storage since. Think he wanted ?80 though. . .

No, if you check the tracks that the rear legs of the seats fit into, you'll see a row of teeth, one of which the legs of the seat engage on, in the event of a serious crash, thus spreading the load that would otherwise be solely on the front adjustment pin.
PS: 5-door and 3-door rear seats are nearly interchangeable, but the two arms that help you fold them don't fit as they are in a different place, depending on the car body. This means that the the bottom part of the rear seat is only held by the central tongue-and-loop affair in the middle, which is not ideal…

The runners are smooth at the bottom, for daily adjustment, but have teeth at the top, on the inboard (handbrake) side, to catch the seat as it lifts and tries to move foward during a crash.
Looking at this level of safety features, and comparing them with today's cars (or even my ProconTen-equipped 1993 Audi 80) I just hope that I never have a big crash in a Mk1!

I'm not sure if this will be any help or not, but I fitted the same seats as you have just bought to my polo and have the same problems - the seats sit a good bit higher than the original ones did and aren't adjustable. I would imagine that it happens in the golf for the same reason as in the polo - the rear seat mounts are higher than they are in the mk2 golf. It might be worth looking out for a set of polo coupe s / gt / ranger seats if mk1 golf gti seats are too hard to find, as I think these would be a direct swap, and there's often a set on ebay, if not your local scrappy

I got the same seats in my mk1 and it was easy to fit the slide adjusters to the other side all you need is the arms from the old seats and mounting braket because if you look at the under side there is a space for a braket to go at the back of the seat frame and hole already drilled at the front just put two small holes at the rear and you can slide you new seats!! would show you how mine turned out but can't get the image to work. how you do it???

also to fit the rear bench into a mk1 you'll need seat ibiza mount pins or mk3 golf as they are longer than the OE mk1 pins and will need to drill a pair of holes in the floor pan but be careful as your fuel tank is right under advise that you drop it off! as thats what I done to mine. Hope this helps.

Fat, it would be good to see a few pics of your work.
If you want to post a picture, its easiest to sign up (all free) with www.photobucket.com, then upload your pics there and under each pic will be the link address to it - in the window on here, click the 'Img' button, copy the pic link after it, then hit the Img button again . Thats it!
