first engine conversion

well, my friend with a mk2 (1.3) has just bought the 2 litre 8v out a mk3 gti and to be totally honest im green with envy

i'm looking to do a straightforward conversion and have found a engine with 70,000 miles reasonably close to where i live.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI 3 DOOR HATCHBACK

1984 CC GTI PETROL

1997 MARK III P REG

would this be as easy to do as his conversion? would the wiring loom fit? is there anything else i should know about?

any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

What kind of Mk1 is the engine going into?

As far as electrics, I think the Mk3 era was the first to have immobilisers in their ECU and there was a changeover at some point in the Mk3's life, so you might need to defeat the immobiliser to use the original ECU. I don't know for sure though to make sure you check properly. There's always the option of adapting K-Jet from a Mk1 GTI, of course.

it's going into a 1983 gti tin top.

my mk1 does have an imobiliser so could this be quite tricky?

More modern cars integrate the immobiliser into the ECU, making it much harder to crack (by the casual thief) but your Mk1 GTI will have an aftermarket one which probably cuts coil and/or fuel pump, so it should be a non-issue to keep it and adapt the wiring to hook up the EFI if you want to, or keep the K-Jet if you want to.

If I were doing this conversion I'd either retain the K-Jet, or look at standalone mappable ECU, to seek out best performance (that's the reason to change the engine, after all?) I imagine the Mk3 ECU is going to be remappable but at a cost, and that it won't be optimal once its in the Mk1 with an exuaust system with no cat, and no need to comply with later emmisions regs etc. But plenty of people would retain the Mk3 ECU.
