engine swap

hi i have at the moment a 1.8 8v carb engine fitted into my mark 1 which was originally a 1.1. i was wondering how much work would it take to swap the engine to 1.8 gti and what would i have to buy apart from the engine and could i also use the gear box of the 1.8 carb engine on the gti engine

would be better advised to sell your car and buy a gti/ failing that, you need all the fuelling parts, from pump to injectors. not sure on the ignition side of things. don't know if carbs have tci units. gti gearbox would be preferable. have you uprated anything else on the car? are the brakes and suspensio (including lack of anti roll bars) all 1.1 still?

the front brakes are uprated to gti and anti roll bars are also fitted. also had after market suspension fitted lowering it 40 mm. front strut brace fitted and rear roll cage. 15 inch alloys and and new gear box bushes

I would look at a different engine totaly . You will not find a great deal of difference between the 1.8 carb and the Gti .

What i am trying to say is the power gains are not going to be that great for the hassle .

16V conversion ? Or 20VT conversion ? Or tweak what you have ?
