I might have a m.k 1 sourced ,I'm gonna have alook at it on sunday. I have aG60 in my m.k 1 already . But i was looking for another m.k1 that i could drive everyday .my other daily drive is a m.k4 golf 1.4.So it has to be diesel as I'm doing 500 miles a week in the m.k 4 .Anyhoo whats the easiest engine to fit into a m.k1 golf ,as in wiring and a basic ecu or an engine that doesn't need ecu .Or are all the more modern V.W worked off an ECU?Year and model to use would be great and engine code even better. Many thanks folks

all depends how modern you want to go
simplest is either a
GTD engine out of MK2 which is a turbo charge 1.6 with about 80BHP, i get around 52-55mpg out of both of mine
you then have a AAZ which is out of MK3 before 1997 i think. these are 1.9 turbo charges engines which give you around 100BHP again around 50mpg
then there the 1Z engine comes in MK3 after 1996 bit fast than the AAZ but these have a ECU and fly by wire accelerator
then bert is just fitting a PD engine in his cabby, very modern engine out of polos and golfs, they have around 120BHP i think but are a fully electric engine and needs alot of wiring and moding to fit
there must be more choice out there but there the few i know about

thanks mate,Right so I've sourced an engine from a 93 passat B3 ,its a 1.6 tdi .but it doesn't have a wiring loom .is this a no go having no loom?It does seem to have everything else ,box shafts intercooler the whole shebang.First question whats the engine code on these ? What should I look out for ?its not in the car so dont actually know if it runs ok .Also should i change anything on the engine before i fit to the car? also its going into a 1.1 petrol car ,so will i have any issues regarding a fuel pump ? do i need the GTI fuel pump /accumalator set up? many thanks .

ok so i was onto this lad again and he reckoned the code is 3B .hes a foreigner so i reckon it could be SB.but he said it had no power and mentioned piston rings .So I'm wondering should I just leave it and look out for an AAZ?Can a turbo charged engine be run on veg. oil by the way? thanks again.

the lad i was talkin to confirmed its SB engine code.hes also told me theres no turbo or intercooler.I was onto another lad that has a diesel engine from a 78 golf supposedly only 60 k .But its a 4 speed box ,whats the engine code on this 1.6 diesel? And what power are these and can I get more power from it?also could i change the SB gearbox onto this engine. Now will I be able to use either engine with no looms ? I mean is it gonna be difficult to get to run properly?Am I better off getting an AAZ engine ?Many thanks

thanks for all the help mate, i'm leaning towards the AAZ for the extra power and because they are easy to source.but i kinda like the idea of the original 1.6 engine though .I have an old scool paint job in mind for the car and I might be relocating at work ,so my 500 miles a week might be coming to an end.although I still wanna do a lot of driving in it.What would you go for the AAz or the CR. come on folks ,answers on a postcard please. Give me a bit of feedback on your conversions.

back again ,the decision is made ,I bought a low mileage 60k. engine code CR from an 82 golf .I got the box, exhaust man. starter ,alt, fuel pump shafts ,well 1 1/2 driveshafts cut with a grinder.everything there just bolt in .first question do i just change the timing belt and change the oil ?or do i pull the engine apart and rebuild it?last driven in 1995 according to the tax book.

cheers mate,I'll just tidy it up and do the belt and an oil change.also should i take the injectors out and check them?any upgrade on power i can do on these?and you mentioned a 5 speed box ,will any 020 box do on these ratio wise ?what sort of mpg should i expect from it?thanks again.
