I am sure that this has been discussed at length but my searching skills are ridiculously rubbish. I will be taking my mk1 cab off the road again this winter like last. I would at this point like to do something with the engine. Sure the 1.8 GTi unit is quite peppy but I am used to alot more power and it's griping me a bit that it's just not a bit quicker. So the 1.8 GTi DX engine is what circa 100 bhp after 25 years and 125k miles? It's revvy but torquey not really. The 1.8 petrol turbo seems to be a popular option but what mpg is that putting down just out of interest? The various diesel engines around in the VW/Audi world put out circa 150 bhp from a 1.9L unit and there's all sorts of tuning options knocking around for those engines. I see a lot of what's the easiest conversion etc but not alot of info about newer oil burners. I will assume that the bigger 2.5L-3.0L units that are around are just too big, too heavy and present gearbox challenges. Bearing in mind I would be asking a trader/garage to do the job as I am in no position to do it myself what realistically are my options?

Looks like I have a green light for a PD engine fit over this coming winter

I think more of these PD engined conversions will become the 'norm', after all who wouldn't want 150bhp+ , 200 odd foot pounds torque and 50 to the gallon. Let us know how you get on.

Proving to be a popular conversion now. Not surprising really when you consider the power figures really

I think the fact you're getting both massive power & economy is a real winner.
