Diesal conversion

Just bought another Mk1 a 1.5 auto GL :D  It is in very good condition, I like the idea of fitting a 1.9 TDI from a Mk3.   I have read up a bit about this conversion and I know you need the wiring loom.   I have also been told that you need the clocks but I want to keep the original dash.   Can I run the Mk1 manual box with a normal speedo cable leaving the electrical speedo wires disconnected?   Any info on this conversion would be much appreciated.
Love reading tech info' to know what's going on in the Mk1 World on this site.
Thanks..Baller

have you done a walkthrough of this conversion.

what sort of power is it pushing. and how much did all the bits cost

Diesel Conversion

Bert Thanks for reading my tectalk on the diesel conversion,I know with
the early 1.9 it has all mechanical  components which doesn't need an ecu
Looking at power outputs the later Mk3 engine has 90 bhp compared to 70
bhp?.Can you tell me the difference between the TD and the TDI .
The later Tdi seems to have much better fuel economy.Looking at your
conversion pics you are obviously very knowledgeable with this subject and can probably put me straight on any questions that I might ask.
Looking at old bits of info the 1.9 turbounwelt ? engine was not that economical .90hp would be good enough for me if it has good economy
as well. Can you tell me the best type of engine to look out for I am only interested in 1.9 engines.Engine codes would help if possible.

                Thanks again Baller

I am a mechanic/mot tester so i know what im doing in swapping engines etc,to be fair if it wasnt for mk1vdub on here doing the conversion first i probably wouldnt have bothered,he gave me some answers to fitting questions and so i went ahead,i used the AAZ turbo diesel pushing 75 BHP standard in a heavier car than the mk1,it had a catalitic converter on it which is restrictive and p/s which is also drag on the crank pulley,i drove the mk3 and it was quite nippy compared to the 1.6D that was in the mk1 i converted, the only things i did were to dump the k03 turbo and fit the 1.6TD garrett T3 on which is more suited to a 1.9,the exhaust is now 2.5 inches stainless with only a rear box so there is good gas flow, and i ground the aneroid pin to allow more fuel to be delivered under boost, and believe me its quick.
Im going on the rolling road when it comes out of hibernation next spring,i know the owner of hitech by me and he will do a power run for me
The unwell turbo diesel was crap if i remember correctly, the tdi is a pain in the ass to fit with too much electrics,so i opted for a '1 day fit' AAZ engine, metal head gasket too on the AAZ so its good for holding boost,my engine was a new vw exchange lump so its got the TDI crank fitted to stop the common bottom pulley problem,i have used a new oil cooler as they are common to leak oil internally to the water system.I used the later poly v belt setup with the later type alternator so it gives 70A instead of 55A,the fuel filter needs to be moved, the water bottle needs moving, and the exhaust needs making specially for the car as a turbo diesel system is no longer avaliable from vw.
Enjoy
Bert

Diesel Conversion

Bert
Thanks for looking in on this topic .Is the aaz engine the one to go for?.
Fuel economy is one of the major factors when going the diesel route  ,if
its crap on fuel what is the point?.75hp standard doesn't sound over bad
in a Mk1 if it would be good on fuel as well.I guess for simplicity mechanical fuel injection would be the way to go ,but they don't seem to be so economical when there is a turbo strapped to it.What sort of mpg are you getting out of your car ?Is there anywhere where I can find fuel
consumption figures for different older vw diesel models to give me a rough guide. The 1.9 non turbo seems to be good on fuel but you just as well have a 1.3 petrol.Would I find an aaz in an early Mk 3.Other than
bert there must be other guys and girls out there with oil burners looking
on.What engine is in the 1.9 turbo passat?Bert being an MOT tester do you
have much trouble with the early Vw diesels going through the emission
test?.More info from anybody thanks again Baller :)

It would be great to see a "how to guide" step by step on a TD/TDI conversion. I have done a few transporter t4 vans in my time but still yet to try a mk1. I have just bought a mk3 N reg estate. It has a 1.9 TDI lump in it. I'm not sure what engine code it has and not sure where to look as the stickers have all been removed but i think it is a CL TDI? I'm guessing 1Z?  90bhp?

Thought about putting the engine from this into a mk1, should be unbeatable on fuel. Don't the mk3's return a good 50+mpg so a lighter mk1 should be 60mpg+? I would imagine a decent chip or time up would see 130bhp. I've been in a mk4 TDI 130bhp and that was unbelievabley torquey. It went like stink!

I have a rebuilt 1.9 ABL motor in my van (yes, the crank pulley did fail hence the rebuild!) I've since fitted a bigger head and a few trick bits to my pump, tweaked the max fuel screw, adjusted the boost actuator arm, it runs 13psi of boost and I've put an intercooler on to cool shiz down and it goes much better. Flys up hills in 5th at any speed. Fuel economy is an issue tho! No different to standard, they all must be crap on fuel.

I could do a how-to for the AAZ conversion. I have the engine waiting to go in the caddy camper and want it in pretty soon as we plan on travelling around europe.
Introduce the bish bosh burger to our continental cousins. :P
Ive never done one before, but it can`t be that difficult. I believe there is an engine mounting required from a mk2 diesel and modification of the downpipe from the turbo.
I believe that I can put together a little wiring loom for the glow plugs.

thanks Sean

I went the TDI root in the end,90hp Passat engine [1z] bought a early one which had no imobilizer and a mechanical speedo, been on the road for a few years now and I wouldn't swap it for anything  :D
