Cabrio Brakes
Hi all,
just after some advice please.
I have a 1983 LHD 1.6CL Cabrio. (I think it has a 1.8 block fitted).
Basically I need to sort the front brakes out as they are s*
T
.
It has 256 mm front discs but they are only 12 mm thick.
Any advice on upgrading the discs and pads (makes and where to buy them as well). I dont want to do too much work, just change pads and discs really.
I will be upgrading the hoses as well.
Any help or advice would be greatfully recieved.

256 and 12mm? didn't think they did 256 solid discs?
have a search as there are plenty of options, mostly dependent on budget and mechanical skills.
if indeed you do have 256 solid discs then uprating to 20mm vented discs should be straight forward.
you probably have 239mm solids, if so, i believe you can change to vented discs and pads without changing anythig else.
always buy the best quality discs and pads you can afford. for road use plain discs are perfectly good. genuine discs and pads will give much greater braking than cheap ones.
i've used zimmerman discs with pagid fast road pads with good results.

cheers wooders
I thought they would have been 239, but defo 256mm x 12mm solid.
whould I have to change the calipers to fit the 20mm discs? or would the pads fit ok.

hmm. in theory you should be able to use vented discs and pads. on the 239mm versions the pads for vented discs are thinner, so they still fit in the same calipers. not 100% but i'm pretty sure this is the case. i'll have a check

Thanks again Wooders,
I just didn't want to waste too much money as the Mrs would never stop nagging.

right it seems it may be as i thought. some passats and i think some mk3's had 256 solid discs. i do believe the calipers are the same as the vented disc versions.
where are you located, as i have some brand new 256mm vented discs and pads.

That sounds great.
I am in Northern Ireland, so it would have to be by post.
let me know how much so I can see if the budget holder will release the funds.

be cheaper to buy them from there bya the time postage etc is taken into account. also lees hassle to change/return if there are problems. thought it'd be a good idea to check if they fit before you buy them. bit too far away though.
