I did it recently!
Time consuming, making up all of the parts mind you…

Used a shifter and cables from a late 90's passat. Fabricated the bracketry in the pic below from 6mm aluminium plate and bought some M8 ball ends from some company online to make up the moving linkages.

There is a german company called CLS that sell motorsport shifters (That's my next project, once the valver lump is in an running) and also sell a cable adaptor plate to fit this typr of box. It is a little simpler than mine is due to the way the shifter works - It pushes/pulls the cables differently. About ?650 all in IIRC

Mine mid build:

It's all in and running. Initial teething probs included it grinding and not engaging 4th, but some adjustment sorted that. You just need to ensure the movement at the box end is enough to engage the gears so your pivot points need to be carefully worked out!

That looks very complex, I can understand the motorsport version but instead of converting a rod change to cable change why not just fit the cable change box ?

Because I didn't have a cable change box, plus they aren't cheap!

Also, the main reason is to keep the 1600cc Gti 5 speed box for its lower ratios. New cable boxes have much longer ratios for higher cruising speeds, so unless you mate it to a G60 or 20VT, then you would probably decrease performance/acceleration!

PLUS - it was a challenge - I like challenges!

And now I own a one of a kind system, which will be a pain if I break it as I'll need to fab new parts… :|
