Best gearbox for a 9A conversion?

Hopefully, it shouldn?t be too long before my ?88 clipper gets a 2l 16v transplant.  I?ve been searching around for advice on the best gearbox for this conversion ? the 2Y or 1.6gti box seem quite popular.  Just wondered if anyone here had any advice or recommendations? Cheers.

totally depends on how you want to drive it. TRack? 1.4 mile? motorways? or just a B road warrior?

I'm running the std mk1 1.8 GTI box, but i wont pretend its the 'best' for the conversion. Mine runs out of gears around an indicated 120 on my 'private test track'…

The mk2 16v box is apparently virtually the same, but with a 'better' top gear, so planning on changing to that at some point, In no rush though.

The track and 1/4 mile lads on CGTI seem to use the 1.6GTi box because of its low ratios etc, but a bit limiting for lengthy driving (ie motorways)

Ideally you want the mk2 16V (Or late mk1 cabbie) 100mm inner CV joints (larger than 90m mk1 GTI spec).  The mk1 boxes will have 90mm flanges so swap some 16v 100mm ones on.

Cable change boxes….not a clue i'm afraid!  But I dont know anyone that has bothered if thats an indication.  worth it if going 20VT or something I guess!

Thanks for that.  It?s going to be for road use, mainly motorway driving.

I'm about to do the same conversion too (currently gathering parts) and I found out that you can use a Caddy diesel box, its the same 1st, 2nd and 3rd but has longer 4th and 5th. So it could be an alternative to the Mk2 16V box.
