audi 5 cylinder conversion?

anyone know if this can be done? i know the engine itself is pretty much a golf engine with an extra cylinder slapped on the end, but is it too big to go in the engine bay of a mk1? what gearbox could be used? engine mounts etc?, anyone know?
cheers, alex.

I once spoke to someone who had seen one of these fitted to a Mk2 so in theory it should fit.

Sorry, doesn't fit.  It hits the chassis leg on one side - my dad measured up for one years ago on one of his Mk1's.  The engine is basically the GTI lump with an extra cylinder on it…

Stick it in the back! lol

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

The later VW VR6 engine fits but only just…

If you want a good, quick, reliable and cheap motor, sling in a 16v unit from a later GTI 16v - find a Mk3 2.0 unit (they were in some Passats and Corrados too).  These engines are ten a penny, there are loads of them in Mk1's so the information and additional parts are all available and the tuning potential is excellent.  Stick twin webers on, high lift cams and a bit of engine work and you are looking at 180bhp+ reliably.

Or you could do what I'm doing - probably easier and cheaper than that!8)
