ABF on DX cabby

I have looked at some articles at this forum about this conversion, but I haven?t got some things very clear. It is about what pieces of my DX motor can be useful in this swap, and which I have to pick up apart form the ones that I take from the ABF motor.I have the ABF motor from a mk3 16v (without gear box),wiring (all),ECU,box of fuses, and ??scoreboard??.Need something more of this motor??

I know that I need 16v exhaust manifold to the conversion (Supersprint,Raceland or Scirocco 16v).Can I use my 1.8 8v gear box,or is better to use another one??Do I have to change something of the ABF motor to fit correctly,or do I have to modify things apart from fixings of the engine or adapting the 8v wiring to 16v??

parts that I cannot obtain from my DX motor or th ABF I have.

Thanks ;)

You can use your g/box ,just use your flywheel and clutch. A mk2 golf 16v g/box and clutch assy may be a better choice. Use all the mk1 engine mounts, the cam belt covers require a little cutting to clear mount. the best ex man is the abf or mk2 golf 16v standard cast item as these are readily/cheaply available, just modify mk1 downpipe to fit. can offer no advice on wiring as i used aftermarket management.

Thanks for answering

So the alternator can be the same that I have on DX.When you say "cast items" what are you refering to??Sorry but my english is not good enough to know some specific words

Your english is very good. "Cast"is how they are made, could be cast iron, cast aluminium etc. To use dx alternator may require swapping of pulleys.

This post I have as favorite  :D

This motor is a 9A engine so I think there are some diferences between 9A and ABF I have from a golf mk3.The question is if I need the starter motor, alternator, water pump of the ABF engine or I can use the ones I have on DX mk1 engine. As MK1ABF says,if the alternator needs a swapping, possibly is better to put one from a 16V to fit correctly with no problems. The starter motor and water pump must be of 16v or the ones I have in DX are plug&play? The cool system with radiator can take from the DX,is it?

I also have other things as Speed front panel (sorry but I don?t know the word you use it to say),catalyzator and ?antiblock key sistem? Is this really necessary??

If using the dx g/box which is a rod change box then use a starter motor from a rod change box. I use one from a mk3 golf 2 ltr 8 valve which turns abf over no problem. I used the water pump that came on the abf engine, it connects up to the bottom of the DX radiator using standard dx bottom hose. Top hose needs modifying. Dont know where you are but yes i have binned abf catalyser. Ecu may cause problems if it has the immobiliser fitted, early type ecu,s dont have this and are the best to use. I actually threw mine away as i couldnt sell it.

So if I put KR g/box it will fit perfectly in ABF block, with KR flywheel and clutch or mantain DX g/box with original Flywheel and clutch(but with this mod you say,"rod change box",can you explain better what is this?).And KR alternator to fit with no mods.

Water pump of ABF,mantain DX radiator, but modify the top hose to fit well.

Put a catalyzer of ABF ?and lambda sonde?.If I take away the inmobiliser,do I have to put catalyzer too??This ECU has immobilizer,so what is the best option to do??

All the rest engine mounts I can take from my GTI DX engine.

Is this correct??

Over here the catalyst is not required on the mk1 golf, i have no idea if you require one or not. You will however have to make provision for the lambda probe.i think the thread is the same as the spark plugs so a little boss welded to the front of the exhaust somewhere. I never used the abf ecu so cannot comment further on this.

As it is digifant,Im going to look about the Cat,probably I?ll have to put it,and insert the lambda somde in the downpipe.

The fuel pump must be from a 16v (KR for example),is it?

Makes no difference if k-jet or digifant, catalyst is down to your motor vehicle regulations. I am using standard mk1 gti fuel pump, it should cope easily. Rod change g/box is as opposed to cable change box. ie the mechanical method of actually changing gear.

Ok,I?ll prove with DX oil pump.

putting the mk2 8v gearbox, the flywheel and clutch have to be from the same box,or its possible to put the KR?s which is lightened, searching the easiest option to fit.

And what about the power steering that I have on my cabby now?Can be supported like other engine mounts or have to modify it?

The abf went into my mk1 as it left the mk3 complete with alternator and power steering pump, although i did take a hammer to the chassis rail for a little clearance.

Finally,I have the new engine at home :D

I have been looking about the exhaust manifold 16v conversion.I have read that the 16v conversion manifold from Ashley?s or Raceland, fits perfectly on 9A engines, but the ABF from golf mk3 is a 16mm taller block,so it may needs modifying. Is that right?Apparently,Supersprint has one that fits with no problems on the ABF conversion. Is the only one??If I put the OEM one from Scirocco 16v or buy a manifold for a Scirocco 16v,would it fit well??

Did you ditch the PS Pump in the end?

No.

So, it just spins along with everything else? Or did you connect it to something, eg a power steering rack or at least a fluid circuit? Apparently if you do this, they fail within a short time, the pump needs to pump fluid inside to lubricate it, or something. Can't find where I read it though…….

Yes to connect both ends i would think a restriction in the circuit would possibly be needed to act like something like a rack, but mine is connected to a power rack.

I have adquired TA-technix manifold, which seems to fit on ABF conversion, like the Supersprint. The difference is that on Supersprint are two pieces manifold and downpipe, and in TA is only the manifold, with no downpipe.Do I need the downpipe to fit it on the manifold too??

is this

this two pieces set with OEM other exhaust system,is it?
