5 speed in a mk1

i was woundering if anyone  knows if is ts possible to ge a  5 speed transmission in my mk1 golf i feel its  little  high on rpms doing 50-60 mph

Big block or small?  big block is easy enough.

its a 1588 so  big block i guess

whats the  judgement?  is there an easy way of installing a 5 speed and what do i have to do? and what  car can i get a  trans from?

Well its a simple bolt in job but i did it over 20 years ago so memory is faint, think i used 1600 gti box and linkage, but can offer no more advice.

yes mk1-3 1.5-2.0 all use 020 gearbox that will fit, but you need mk1 5 speed linkage parts and upper gearbox bracket. you have 90mm flanges on your box so bear that in mind, a lot of the 1.8-2.0 boxes have 100mm flanges which means either get later cab/rocco 100mm shafts or fit later 90mm flanges to your box
