Hi,
I have a slight problem with my 20vt engine which has been stood a fair while before going into my mk1. When the engine is running there is heavy smoke coming from the crankcase breather, which increases and decreases with revs, so I'm guessing its exhaust gases somehow getting into the crankcase. I've been told it could possibly be a broken or stuck piston ring, I have not had the engine stripped at all to check. Does anybody have any ideas what this could be?
Many Thanks

Is it definitely smoke or is it steam? smoke could be too much oil or piston rings, steam means it needs an oil&filter change and a good hard run to burn all the condensation out of the crankcase..
have you checked the valve to see if it stillworks? it should rattle when you shake it, if not its seized and needs replacing.

Yes mate its definitely smoke, thats what I'm thinking possibly piston rings. I'm going to get compression tester on it and see.
Ive had away with the valve and just have a pipe into catch tank.
