20vt Coolant Plumbing

Post

I have had my 20vt conversion on the road for around a week now and have experienced some problems, one being the oil seals on my turbo have gone and also the heater within the car seems to stay blowing hot air even when set on cold.

Theres a picture of the coolant plumbing that I have set up on my AEB engine. Can anybody check this and give any comments?

Tbf it hasnt had any problems with the engine temp at all, and the heater itself seems nackered because it also doesnt turn off all the time when set to 0.

Cheers

Right I think I have had the idea of the coolant flowing the opposite way around. The water fills up from the bottom of the block and therefore exits out the top flange. So my gate valve for the heater matrix wants to be on the top pipe.

I have labelled the coolant temp the thermostat for some reason, the thermostat stops the flow of coolant from the bottom of the rad into the water pump until the engine is upto temp.

That said my turbo line feeds back into my top rad, so there is no flow around the turbo until my thermostat is open and coolant is flowing through the radiator.

Does anybody know if the fact my coolant line for the turbo isnt always flowing when cold will have a damaging effect? I think I will be re-routing to be safe anyway.

I would have thought you would be providing coolant to the turbo at all times, otherwise it won't last very long.

I'd agree that your turbo should be fed all the time, but not having one of these fitted I can't say for certain.
'Normally' coolant enters he top of a block and exits from the bottom where it has done its job and removed the heat, so your idea of reversal seems a strange one. I would also have put your gate valve before the heater matrix otherwise you'll still get residual heat from the matrix in the summer. … And does the gate valve have an alternative 'round' it when closed

Looking at the Audi servicing instructions, cooling diagram. The coolant exits the flange from the side of the head, so does it not have to fill from the bottom as there is no other inlet to the engine?
