There's a grinding sound coming from the front end of the car when turning left, I'm thinking it may be around the CV joint as there is a little play in the drive shaft. Is it normal to have a small bit of play in the drive shaft with this conversion and would that be making the sound? I've been round everything on the car making sure every things tight and good, and this is the only thing it appears it could be. Any ideas?
Cheers

Yeh second hand one peter, I'm going to rebuild it at the weekend. My passenger side drive shaft seems to be at abit of a tight angle where the CV joint meets gearbox. I cant see how the angle would be any different to other 20vt conversions though as all mounts have been brought. How does yours fit? I'll upload a picture tomorrow to show you what I mean about the angle it sits at. Cheers

That's the angle it sits at with the wheels straight, does this seem normal?

I've used the crazy quiffs engine mounts so cant see how it would sit that much different to other conversions. The inlet manifold only just allows the bonnet to shut aswell.

Thats what I'm thinking, that there cant be that much difference in how the engine sits. What car are the driveshafts from again, I cant remember?

how low are you running the car ? have you fitted a shallow sump cos your so low?
If so i would say your shaft is to long i had the same problem which ended up breaking the inner cv joint any vibrations when driving slight wobble at all?

Yes mate, that's what is happening vibrations and abit of a grinding sensation when turning left. It isnt stupidly low though, but it does look as if the shaft is maybe too long. What did you do about the problem? Saying that there is a little play in the shaft from side to side.
I cant remember what the drive shafts are from. Im running an 02a box if that makes any difference. There 100mm shafts though

I had one made 20 mm shorter but my shaft was already shortened by 5mm I'm running pretty low this was very exspensive but I didn't want to worry about it I just wanted it sorted
The cheapest way is to fit a mk 3 polo diesel shaft just the shaft use your inner and outer cv joints
Your shaft should be approx 535 long the polo shaft will be 515

Would there be play in the shaft if it was too long though?
Are the likes of scirrocco and mk1 driveshafts the same length?

Best way to check is unbolt the inner cv joint jack the wheel up so it sits at ride height and see where the joint sits I bet the shaft is sat through the joint and poking into the cup on the gearbox making the joint run back over the shaft
I spent hours looking through tech specs on shafts etc pretty sure the lupo and polo ones are the only ones shorter than yours polo has same splines both ends etc as yours / cabby shafts ie 100mm cups

You might just have a worn / dry joint making it vibrate so deffo worth taking off shaft and checking
My friend also running a 20v turbo using just caddy mounts etc has the same problem as I had since lowering it the shaft is to long

Ok, cheers mate. I'm going to strip it at the weekend so I'll let you know how I get on. Theres no reason for the shaft to be too long if the ride height is normal though is there?
