20v Turbo Intercooler pipework question

Post

Hi there. I am pretty much ready for my AGU to go into my mk1 golf and I will be looking at buying some intercooler pipework and hoses.
I have this front mount intercooler - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310234340520?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Any info would be great.
Thanks

Hi there,

I have a 2.25" front mount inter-cooler but most seem to go for a 2.5". You'll need either 2.25" pipework or silicone reducers and 2.5" pipework if that makes sense.

Depends on what sort you want mate. I bought a kit and there's more than enough in it for a 20v conversion.

Perhaps something like this………. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-8-PIECE-ALLOY-ALUMINIUM-2-25-TURBO-BOOST-INTERCOOLER-HARD-PIPE-KIT-/390461192717?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5ae94cfa0d

If you don't want to go down the kit route as there'll be too much for you then work out what you will need in terms of straight bits and bends and price it up individually.

Hope this helps.

Have a look at my build thread and you'll see what I have done routing it. There's a few ways to do it.

Thanks! I think the kit looks reasonable for what you get. I also need an air filter. What would you suggest?
Hoping to get the engine in at the weekend!

I haven't chosen one yet for mine so am not really in a great position to offer advice. There's a fair few established maunfacturers out there such as K&N, ITG, etc. etc.

Get your engine in and bolted up and then go for the rad  and intercooler fitting and make sure everything fits as it should. What fan setup are you going for? It's fairly tight around the front and can be around the T.I.P and intercooler pipe work so this could have an effect on what sort of filter you go for.,

Ahh ok. I will leave the air filter for a bit. I can start it for a bit without one anayways. Your thread looks great by the way. Im so rubbish at remembering to take photos of mine!
The car has been fully re-sprayed inside and out in helios blue! Ill put some pics up when i get a chance.
I havnt chosen a rad or fan yet? any reccomendations again? sorry  :$
I was going to try and get the old rad to fit? I can see that the fan will definately not fit!
Some people have said that the mk2 16v kr rad is good to use with a slimline fan from ebay?
Any ideas on coolant pipework? sorry to be a pain, i just want to get all the bits before i get stuck as im pushed for time!!

I am currently at this stage with my build so I can tell you what I have so far.

I have got a MK1 GTI rad and 2 x 8" slim line fans but most doing the conversion go for 1 x 10" or 1 x 12" I think will fit.

As for pipework to the rad it will have to be fabricated. I have bought about half a metre of 34mm aluminum tubing and will cut it for what I need. You will also need to buy some silicone elbows to make it to fit. I would fit the engine first and then build it up as you go.

jetex air filter . either mk1 rad 2x slim fans or mk2 16v rad 1x slim fan with mk2 16v coolant pipe top hose mercades 190e bottom hose mk2 16v . like smudge said get engine in first decide if you keep battery in bay or boot. get intercooler fitted then rad. then make your intercooling piping. intercooler and rad was the last thing i did as when all fitted you can make it to suit engine. get your self a vice and cut the pipework to suit easy. dont cheap out on clamps and they fly off. let me know what turbo you running ko3 or ko4 battery in boot or not and i let you know what intercooler pipeing you will need as there is so many differnt kits you wont need half the pipes that are there as ive done both .

Wow thanks mate. I have bought one of those intercooler pipe kits that smudger suggested and actually only bought 1x10" slimline fan. im going to run the old mk1 gti radiator. Thinking about it, that may not be enough to cool it, but they not too expensive so ill see how i go!
I think i have sorted how its all going now but cheers for the heads up on the air filter.
Im hoping to keep the battery in the old position.
Should that air filter go onto the old agu pipework with old battery position, or should I upgrade? Not looking for extreme performance, just 180bhp ish.
Getting there with the conversion now, waiting for new ko3 turbo and manifold as the one i had was cracked and the turbo had loads of end float!! Bloody ebay s**t!
Once that gets here, im ready to drop the beast in….once i can get the old downpipe off the exhaust. Stupid crappy jobs that take longer than anything actually challenging!
cheers

I had a spare KO3 manifold floating about in my shed. If you have bought one nevermind.

As for the air filter it all gets a bit tight around that side of the engine with the T.I.P and engine cooling pipes and intercooler pipes but I think retaining the battery can be done.

Great. Hopefully the new manifold the chap is sending me will be ok.
I guess its a trial and error thing with pipework so I will have to wait until I get there!
Thanks again

No worries mate. We spent last Sunday just mocking up the pipe work and trial fitting inter cooler and fans etc etc to see. Next Sunday hopefully it will all be going into place
