The Mk3 16v is a "Tall Block" and can cause some clearance problems with the bonnet!!! Also, You can buy an exhaust manifold for a 16v into Mk1 conversion if you use a Mk2 16v, but because the Mk3 block is taller (by about 18mm I think) it means it doesn't fit properly and would need to be cut and lengthened…

Easier to use a 16v from a Mk2 - I am currently stripping one to see if it can be revived for My Mk1. Going to try and run it on a set of Carbs from a Honda CBR 1000 which I got on Flea Bay for ?1!!!

cheers m8, what about bottom end? seems to be a few about running mk3 bottoom ends.  if i was to get my hands on a mk3 bottom end, mk2 16v top end what gearbox/driveshafts would i use or is it a case of making them fit?
cheers for this,
paul.

hi mate, if ur after a 2.0 then the one u want is a has the engine code 9a, this is found in early corrado and passats. the difference is that they arent as high meaning they fit perfectly with the conversion manifold and mk1 engine mounts. run it on mk2 golf 16v injection/ecu as there is less wiring and install the inlet cam from the mk2 kr 1.8 engine as the 9a engines had a detuned inlet cam to reduce emmissions to protect the cat which the mk2 hasnt got! :D  if u want more power that is

mines running with the 8v gearbox simply because i got my engine from an auto as it would be in better condition and never had a 16v one.. runs fine, except on the motorway in 5th it revs too high (drinks more petrol) upgrade to a 16v box if u like but remember u need the matching driveshafts too. 16v box has a longer ratio 5th gear.

dont 4get brakes/susp! b4 tearing up the streets in your new 150+ bhp beast

I've got a nice, short ratio 9A gearbox in mine. I'm going to keep that if the 16v is ok and actually goes into the car…

Like G60RGE said though, Motorway cruising is a bit difficult - You have to keep it under 70mph, or it realy drinks the juice (but it don't half get up to 70mph quick… )

is your 9a gearbox cable change? those cable change mounts aint half expensive are they, wonder how much difference they make?

No - it is a Mk1 Campaign 020 9a box, though a friend and I are working on a cable conversion with motorsport shifter for it… Get rid of all that sloppy mechanical jiggery pokery that goes on!
More details will follow IF it all works out
