2.0 16v conversion guide?
I feel like an arse for posting this as I'm sure there must be a thousand posts like this already but no matter how many times I search on this forum for it I can't find it. I've found a couple links on Google of a guide but nothing to great to be honest so I was wondering if anyone knows of a definitive guide to doing a 2.0 16v conversion on a 1.8 GTi.
I'd probably use the ABF (110kw) engine from a MK3 Golf, would that be easy enough? my main concern is getting the engine in and gearbox mounted up, can I use my original mounts for this?
Thanks
Adrian

Well I've learnt something already, the ABF is a tall block which although will fit in a MK1 the TB might hit the bonnet and the exhaust will be a pain..
That leaves me with the 9A or the 6A engine.. More than likely use the 9A as that seems what everyone else uses, accompanied by a set of shrick cams, supersprint manifold, maybe a bit of port / polishing etc (no idea what I'm talking about!) should achieve 180bhp+
I am going to fully document the swap with pictures etc so should make for interesting reading

will take a look see if i can find it for you.
9a's are becoming pretty hard to find at decent prices now too

If you swap to digi injection, it will be fine.
The exhaust isnt tricky either, you just need a 16v conversion manifold that comes in 2 parts like the raceland or supersprint one.
If you are sticking with the rod change gear box, then the engine will drop in on exisiting mounts and then its just a case of plumb and wire.
If you want to switch to a cable change box, then you will need custom mounts, either a hydraulic clutch conversion or seat cable clutch mech, and you will have to mount the cable shifter.

Am I right in thinking the 2.0 16v Passat 'GT' is a 9A engine? I've been offered a Passat so if all is ok I might take it
Thanks again
Adrian
P.S. Manic - Still waiting on that email hehe

Passat GT uses a 9A engine, beware some Passats were fitted with 1.8 16V engines too - you'd need to look at the back of the block, or read off the engine code, to be sure what you're getting.

1 How come some people say the engine has clearance probs on bonnet but others don't?
2. Also, what engine mounts did you use (i dont want vibrations through the car, but also dont want the engine to rock and hit the bonnet.
3. I have an ashley 16v into mk1, anyone tried this with a 2.0l abf?
Thanks for any help.
