i used a polo loom for the spark of a carbed car so you should be ok with what you have got i think , i had my ruinng , all you need is spark fuel and air .

Polo loom? He means polo dizzy, which has mech & vac advance. The alternative is to use the Mk2 16V ECU, which is probably the cheapest and easiest way to do it; or an aftermarket ignition ECU, which will cost a lot!

then would i mate the 16v loom into the gls loom?

"16v loom" would be just the ignition part - which only connects to ignition components. There's only connections to the coil, earth, temp sensor, TCI and ECU. its not the "engine loom" its just a bit of wire.

An after market timing computer is nice.   you can really take advantage of the timing advance carbs love.

The MSD setup allows for a 20* advance at 3krpms and above.  it lowers the amount of retard at idle so you don't have issues trying to start it.   it works great.   It also has a custom pills you can buy to drop the advance at certain RPMs.  At Redline you want you advance to retard a little for best performance..   but  if it's a street car you should be fine without.

The units can be bought on ebay very often.  or new.

MSD 6A or 6AL
MSD 8980 Timing computer

Grab your factory 6 wire ICM, 16v Distributor and you're set

Just another option for you.

or even simpler:

run the ICM directly to the coil and the distributor.   you won't get any timing change,  but it's easy.   I actually carry that harness in my glove box just in case.

yeah the old loom would work for spark only, no advance. polo/mk1/mk2 1.0-1.3 dizzy works for vac advance but its hardly going to be right for a 16v. 16v ign controller as paul says will be close to perfect and also cheap as chips if you're patient. then theres aftermarket which costs more but infinitly adjustible, prob worth it if going for big mods as you'll get the best out of it.

i did not use the polo dizzy i just used the  ignition  loom from the polo as its fits the dizzy , i only used it for the spark ? and it worked

yeah that'll work, but you wont get any ignition advance at all as all of that is completly controlled by the 16v ign controller.  a polo diuzzy would have been better as that at least that has some advance as it has weights inside.

Any problems starting? Have you had the car rolling road tested, or done a 1/4 mile run in it (if so, what figures did you achieve)? I reckon the lack of advance is leaving you 10-20% down on optimal performance.

When I originally put my 16V together the pins on the ECU were corroded and I didn't get any advance, but it still ran strong (much better than the 1.8 8v), so you basically won't feel the difference but there will be a loss. Also, it can be masked by overadvancing it, but then this makes it tricky to start (the advance tries to kick the engine backwards, against the starter motor, at the low revs).
