What have you fitted - Mk1 loom? Mk2 loom? fusebox? etc more info needed

What else have you checked? It could be something very simple, or something you've missed to do. Pics of the entire ignition setup please?

The mk1 now has a 90 spec mk2 KR lump with the ECU an early per 90 loom witch has been modified to run from the early mk1 fuse box

I have connected every thing up and when turning the key the lump tries to fire but wont turn over

I have also put on an ABF dizzy cap but will I need to replace the rotor arm for an ABF item too ??

Thanks

Rotar arm does not need changing.  Make sure you have the firing order right on the new cap.

You are definitely not getting spark from any of the plugs?   Double check your ECU/TCI Loom connections, Coil connections,  Earthing etc.

Once you make sure spark is ok, check you are getting fuel, Double check timing, make sure there's no Intake system (Vac hoses etc) leaks.

Thanks for the replays  8) but its  still no good I have got power going to the coil with the ignition turned on but when I turn the key fully the lump is trying but there's nothing coming from the coil  :don'tknow: it was ok when the mk2 was running but not now

Also when I put a test light on the coils positive terminal it lights up but it also does it when touching the negative  :|  should this be happening ??

And another thing that I was thinking of is the plug (with three leads going to it) that connects to the underneath of the dizzy cap to the housing, does this feed the dizzy cap at all as one of the leads becomes live when the ignition is on and the other two don't !!

This is all probably basic stuff but I am lost when it comes to wiring

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks People   :D

Oops sorry about that

The loom that I have fitted was off a mk1 golf that was runnng a 16v engine, my dad bought it from a kid that was turboing his 16v so he sold us the full wiring to get owens running.

What I have is ….

D,reg mk1 Gti cabby (with a bullet fuse box) and a 90 spec mk2 16v engine (KR). But the mk1 had an engine problem at some point in its life as we got it with a diesel engine in. So we took that and its loom out an fitted the KR and its box witch came with no wiring loom.

When we got the new loom it came all labeled up and was told by the seller that every thing was there to get the KR running so off we went about fitting it but as previously posted we cant get a spark

We have all the wiring from the KR to the fuse box and there doesn't seem to be any plugs on the engine that hasn't got something going to it, and then the loom from the ECU to engine / fuse box

Do you think there is something missing ??

Thanks in advance  :D

So ALL your wiring is the Mk2 KR loom?  And you ahve the Mk2 Idle System (ISV etc)?

Start with the ECU/TCI.  Really, use the image cero posted, make sure you have that connected up correctly.

I'm literally about to head to North London where my Mk1 is sitting at the moment to change the engine, so I might be able to work through it with you over the weekend.

I'll email you the 16V FAQ for starters…

Yes you've missed something. If you haven't missed any wiring, it would be running. But….I don't know what you're missing. Best thing would be pics of each part, with cleaned up wires so people can see the colour codes too. For instance you don't mention the TCI - it will need to be connected to work! Hall sender? Coil? etc.
