Not cheap and not an easy conversion but there is enough room. If you need some info try the PVW website there is lots on there.
Hope this helps
I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday

The ClubGti forum has some good info on this and there is even a guide to tell you which engine codes have which bits on them AND which cars they came in.
There are companies out there (Designa Dubs for one I believe) who will supply and fit the engine for about ?4500.
Not cheap!

Thats a lot of money for a conversion on a MK1 if you ask me.
What about a PD diesel lump? :dontknow:

You reckon that would be easier? :?
You'd need to change pretty much everything then. May as well have goen 20VT as it's far easier! :?

Why would it be any more dificult than a 20v t conversion? Benifits of all that torque and imagine the MPG in a mk1 8) . Cheap to get performance gains through chipping. Sounds good to me

its a ncie idea as a fantasy but inreality im not sure id fancy a mk1 with that much power, they werent ever designed for it sounds a bit hairy for me
( must be an age thing)
the chassis and brakes will need some serious uprating and A cage woulde be a good idea, itd have tp be almost race spec i would have thought and itd be horrible on the road
Ive always fancied the 1.9 conversion in mine , with 256 mm disks eibach arbs and a boge kit already it would be a nice torquey point to point machine
keeps the cars character but with a bit more oomph
can see why your tempted though
