1.6 81 gti to 1.5 diesel insurance

Hi,
I am looking at a mk1 golf,  a black gti one.  If I get it I couldn't inside a gti due to my age.  Would it be possible to do a diesel conversion and change it to a non gti on the log book so that I could insure it?
This is the most suitable car I have found so far within 200 miles of my house.
And it's only 500 quid.

Ur best off just keeping it as a gti. Not sure how much work is needed to change to the diesel. But you have to informed DVLA of the engine change but they will want a certificate of proof from a garage that done the engine swap or if u do it ur self u need some sort of mechanical engineer to do a test on the engine to submit his proof of the engine downgrade. DVLA were only request information on downgrading the engine CC not goin up in CC. shop around for car insurance try some of the specialist classic car insurers or some on the forums. Try sky there pretty good using them myself.
