1.3 to ABF conversion help please

a few mechanical and many electrical question

Where to start…..

When I purchased my 83 3 door mk1 tin top it had a 1.3 engine in it and all it needed to get running (I think) was make an inlet manifold and bolt on the bike carbs……. My eyes where bigger than my belly???? and I thought to myself I want this to be a minter plus when she was all finished I didn’t want any little chavs burning passed me in there corsas or whatever else their parents have brought them….. my plans where flying around in my head and so I went out on an impulse and got myself an ABF mk3 gti 16v lump……still didn’t really know what I was doing first mk1 and engine conversion I have tackled. It was cold and wet outside and well dry in my garage so I began to strip then engine planning a full rebuild. I got as far as taking the whole lot apart and sending the head away for a professional rebuild. They came back with a price of £700 gulp. I only payed £150 for the engine so as luck would have it a friend mentioned that he had a mk3 gti 16v at his unit. I asked him how much and he said you can take what you want for £150 but the shell had to say where it was. I jumped at it and got myself down there in the weeks running up to Christmas and got stepping it out. The car had been sat for months with no attention. I strapped on a battery and she fired straight up. Result engine loom and anything else I wanted £150 so I started stripping. That was then and this is now and many months have passed. I don’t do things in half’s so I started by stripping out my 1.3 and then decided to continue to rip things out the engine bay, scuttle tray and anything else that was welded in there and smoothed it out…..if you’re going to do this have make sure you have patience and lots of spare time. It feels like the last 5 months I have spent in my engine bay every evening and weekend, snow, rain, sleet and the ocional bit of sun.

Well the car is a rolling shell now and has gone to the body shop to have driver’s sill, and both rear wheel arches replaced then a fresh lick of paint inside outside and engine bay.

Now onto my questions.

1) I have acquired a rear disc conversion from a mk2 16v GTi which I want to fit. Mk1 gti front setup but what I don’t have is a servo so what would you recommend I hunt down to fit onto the bios bar.

2) What do I have to the rear discs regarding bios setup?

3) Fuelling what is the best way for me to go….would you recommend getting a mk1 GTi setup? (Tank and pump)

This is where I’m frazzled I’m sure it’s not that difficult and been answered multiply time but please help.

4) Electrics, with regards to the loom which is the best way to go. Should I just modify the existing 1.3 loom and add the necessary connections or should I upgrade to a GTi loom and go from there. I am concerned that I am going to struggle here and as much help and direction as you can give me will be much appreciated.

If anyone has a electrical drawing that will aid me with the simplist methods of the additional conections i need that would be amazing.

Im Sure I will have many more questions as my buld contines

I will add some picture if i can figure out how soon.

Thanks in advance

Ross

I'm doing exactly the same conversion at the moment with my a reg driver :-)

from doing research we need to change the fuel pump lines and tank from the gti to get the injection running.

with regards to the loom, if it's thr later fuse box im told its fine to use that and splice the abf loom into it

Right time to find a fuel tank and pump.

Do you know the best place to get fuel lines?

Better have a look at my fuse box when i get home and see if thats something else i need.
