Im sure this questions been asked alot, but all the different threads are frying my miind!
I currently have an 02a box and 02a shifter tower mounted in car and through firewall.
However I am wanting the interior to all look stock so want the center console around my gear stick.
If I buy an 02j tower and mount underneath the car, how do I go about fitting the cables to the shifter at the gearbox, also is there enough room to mount under there with a 2.5'' exhaust??
Cheers

Ive got a cable shifter in my garage waiting to go on my golf, the bloke who i got it from said he mounted it underneath the car and had a little gear stick extender, Im pretty sure Berts done this to his derv clipper in the project section

yes there is room, i have done mine and smudgers this way but you will need 02J to do it.
you will also need the 02j bit for the gearbox.

Cheers Guys.
Does the 02j bit for the gearbox, fit straight onto the 02a box?

yes if you have all the bits.
shifter bit fits in the hole, you may need the bottom bearing as well.

Can I swap the gearbox selector bracket without taking out the gearbox, does it just pull out from the top?

Also I can get hold of a mk4 golf 2.0l shifter tower and cables. Does anybody know if they have the 02j box (it looks like what i need) and if this would fit?

Yes gearbox bracket is only 3 bolts easy to remove and fit. i don't know bout a 20l mk4 golf but the early o2j towers is what I have of a 1998 mk4 golf 1.8t if you need 1 let me know as a m8 might have 1. Also to get a perfect shift feel I've got a Audi tt short shift with the latest bow catches on the cable. I take sum pitcures over the weekend end and post here. Im using a polo gti shifter . A mk4 2.0l shifter should be same as other mk4 shifters loads on ebay

Cheers Peter. Yeh if you can get a price off of your pal, I'm going to get the car on the road with the 02a shifter, then I'll look at changing it. Really want the standard look inside! When you say your using a polo gti shifter, are you talking about the shifter into the gearbox or the tower?

That shifter on eBay look like the right 1. I'm using a polo gti shifter in car due to having the shifter mounted in the car as it has shorter cable lengh. Only reason I mounted in car was I like the shifter high. So if U want stock look U want that shifter on eBay mounted underneath with a o2j mk4 golf tower in gearbox job done

Sweet as, and is that what you said your mate may have? Is the reverse light switch still on the 02j gearbox tower as it is hte 02a, also how hard of a job are the short shifters to fit?

Yes 02j towers that fit in gearbox are not easy to find as people don't wanna split them from gearbox. Reverse light is on the actual 02j tower if using a cable clutch the cable hits the switch so what i did was remove switch fit a small bolt to cover hole then find your reverse light wires there is 2 of them and join some cable and run bk into car and fit them to a small switch and have switch where U like in car. If using hydroloc clucth then reverse switch can stay. I ask my m8 bout the tower trm. Oh and the short shift is 1 bolt 2 min job

Yeh I'm using hydraulic so no problems there, Let me know what your mate says peter? With the short shifter, are all the 1.8t 02j gearbox's the same, or is the tt one you have different? and better?

I went a different way with mine and have bought one of these kits:
http://www.clausvonessen.de/pi38/pd648.html
The advantage is that it keeps all the shifter and interior of the car stock. My 02A had just had the tower refurbed with new phosphor bronze bushes so it seemed a shame to change it all out, plus the difficulty and cost of finding all the right cable change bits made this seem like reasonable value.
It's arrived and looks exactly as in the photo, all stainless steel. I'll be fitting it in the next few weeks and will report back on how I get on.

I was looking at that aswell when I had the o2a setup. The 02a shifter in car is pants I hated it . Now with a o2j setup its like a 2013 car rolled out the factory. Its not hard to find the bits a mk4 golf gti has everything U need. I list the parts later
Worth knowing - I'll keep that in mind if the rod change doesn't feel good
