02a or 02j

What the best and why?

Really need help to decide?

Have you had both?

Whats the difference with all the different 02j's and 02a's?

Please help, car is off the road with a broken 020!

ive seen o2a boxes go the same way as 020 boxes im using a 2y 020 16v box never used a 02a as its easier enough to pick up 020 boxes


for what it would cost id get a wavetec diff for a 020 and fit that club gti is your best bet for info

depends on the code of the box for ratios, i did a comparison with the 2 i had and the 02j was flat out at 135 (A3 Box) where the 02a was flat out at 168 (G60 Box) bot at 7000 rpm but the first 3 gears on the 02j was way better

When you say flat out at 135 what exactly do you mean? I want to be able to go faster than that. On the autobahn ofcourse!

I just bought an 02a with diff to replace my o20, main reason was being able to run better clutch for 20v and better gearing just means I had to get 100mm flange driveshafts too. Oh and I prefer cable change over rod.

When u say with diff, u mean after market like quiafe or sonething? Have you had any trouble? Can u give it a good thrashing and not be worried about breaking it?

I have an o2j with a peloquin LSD and hydraulic clutch in my 16VG60. Works a treat, takes the power well, the ratios are spot on allowing the car to be driven hard or pottering around. Above 4000rpm becomes hectic though :-)

Do you know which of the 02j's you have. What about rpm's at motorway speed?

No I am not sure, Midland VW sourced and refurbed it for me, it came out of a Mk4 Golf GTI.

I think it is about 3500rpm at 70mph, so about 500 less than the 020 setup - although motorway running is not what this car is about !!

I agree but the inlaws live 400 miles away and I like to take the mk1 down the road so fuel economy is important to me aswell as acceleration.
