You know you've been driving a mk1 too long when...
2. You get in your friends car and say "Wow! Turbo wipers!"
3. You drive any other car and almost fly through the windscreen the first time you touch the brake pedal.
4. Your friend asks you to pop the bonnet on their car and you scrabble around in the passenger footwell.
5. You say things like "It's got an EW chassis you know!"
6. You've got more muscle in your clutch leg than any other part of your body.
7. You drive your friends car and are amazed how much of the road you can see at night.
8. You still think 15" alloys are huge
9. Your ambition is to find a pirelli centre cap at a boot fair..
10. Every other car on the road looks dull and boring, except other mk1s…
Cheers,
Drew.

19. When people look honestly shocked that you can actually drive a car without power steering, and manage to park it! (and it's even funnier when you let someone else have a go, and they can't!)

21. When other people get in your car and look for the end of the seatbelt and you tell em to hook it under the bar (usually get a worried look then).

At the risk of jerking on this thread's steering wheel……here is a particularly hilarious rant about the differences between Mk1,Mk2, Mk3 and Mk4 owners.

You point out other Mk1s and explain that "it's like a brotherhood you know" (true), especially if you can say "the guy in it looked quite old - you see I'm not the only one….."
You never get fed up with answering the question "what's so special about them?"

I am considering making an "in-flight" magazine to answer all the FAQs i get on the subject from passengers…
I remember one girlfriend driving my golf and getting home talking to her mother about the strange man who flashed and waved.. "he was in a Volkswagen…I dont know anyone else with a volkswagen…?"
When I told her it was the car not her she did not beleive me..

I think driving a mk1 says a lot about who you are.
I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday
