Would you sell or break a VGC MK1 Cab?

My VGC GTi cab isn't selling and is worth more as parts compared to it's asking price. I've no room in the garage and don't want her outside until the summer. I'm also tempted to keep the wheels. Would you do the right thing and cover her up until the Spring, or would you take the cash?

I can understand getting desperate for cash, but if there's no reason other than money to split it then it's a bit unfair to the car.

We're supposed to love these cars :D And splitting a good mk1 ain't showing it love.  If all the individual bits sell then you'll be left with a bare shell which no-one will want, and it's likley to end up going to the crusher. Waste!

Hang on and try and sell it as a whole 8)

I know you're right. You can probably tell from the tone of my question that I'll almost certainly do the right thing.
These old MK1's sure get under your skin.

Its tricky as i am 100% behind trying to keep as many about as possible, but then if people didnt break them, people wouldnt have access to bits to keep theres on the road :-)

That said i would rather seeing rotten ones that need welding or blown engine cars stripped rather than a car that is still gona be a good motor for someone

good luck with it

if you break it be warned it will take months of hard work stripping and advertising, couriers, post office, time wasters and kicking yourself when you see a widget you sold for a fiver go for £100 on ebay.and a ton of space, you will also be left with lots of bits. it takes months to get the money to so dont do if you need cash in a hurry, it will eventually sell, take any bits off that can be sold and standard bits put back on to recoup any lost money by dropping the price. i have broken mk1s mk2s and beetles and at the moment breaking an s4, really couldnt sell it so no brainer to break( for me)
not the best time to sell a cab though so good luck what ever you decide
stick it on gumtree and any other free site, and ebay will give you an idea of what its worth at the moment

spot on i agree with all this it can be a lot of hassle breaking cars and can take a long time to sell the parts (depending on what the car is)

i recently broke my cab complete front end went in a week at around 270 got £50 a wing same on bonnet
most has gone now but still have interior doors and boot

so i would probably break it but thats upto you to decide.
i have a lot of space to store all my cars and parts so they dont get in my way

will just say couriers are a pain caught 1 nicking car batteries the other week :twisted:thought no 1 was looking :o

I thought this was the case but if you concentrate on higher value/bigger parts first, then you can quite easily make £1000 or so back in 5-10 transactions. You don't need to keep all the little bits if you don't want to. And some parts are effectively worthless anyway and can go straight in the bin.

If your not desperate for the money, just cover her up until spring.
As I said to someone the other day regarding buying and selling these type of cars on this website.
You buy them in the Winter because they are almost always cheaper and you sell them in the Spring when they fetch more!

Seems a shame to scrap her.  :dontknow:

Racer makes a good point about the hassle involved. It's massive ball-ache to keep having to package stuff up, trek down the post office and then queue up etc etc.

Totally your choice at the end of the day but if it were me I would keep intact if at all possible :)

this one yeah Dom ?

would be a shame to break it, and weigh in the shell and whats left as looks ok, but real bad time for selling a cabby, what about dropping the price, or putting it on ebay with an offers button and seeing what people offer ?

yes selling the higher value parts get you big chunks of money but certain parts cant go until last, wheels for example as its impossible to move around car without them (my garage is quite small) and whats the point of breaking a car up if your going to throw bits away, the idea is to release as much money as possible so you end up keeping everything because as soon as you throw it someone will want one :banghead:

When I did it the shell was never going to be sold, so I put the car onto a trailer, and disassembled the suspension/wheels while it was on it, then dropped the shell onto wooden blocks on the trailer and strapped it on. I used an engine crane to lift/lower the car while it was on it.

Cars for breaking are often worn out, and some of the bits are broken/worn out, so only fit for the bin. I don't sell rubbish bits, its not fair on the buyer. I'll only sell something with a reasonable life left on it.

supose it all depends on where you have to work.

yes some bits are scrap on worn out cars but i only broke mine as i wasnt selling an s4 with nothing wrong with it and  3k worth of new brakes on for £2100 (highest bid at the 3rd try on ebay)
