Which key code? HV or AH?

Hi there, well I've decided to get some nice new keys as I am refurbing the locks. Going to purchase a couple of proper vw blanks off fleabay but which code is my key?

I reckon it's AH but would be nice if somebody in the know can confirm? here is the cr*ppy key which came with my car:

I need to get a new key aswell but just ralised i'm not sure which I have although an original key.





as you can see there is a mark on the key which makes me think its an A, but depending which way you look at it , it could be AH or HV

That looks HV to me :?

My 83 GTi key is AH..not sure if they were all the same though

Which way do you hold your key to read the lettering?

Mine is different to drapoons as his has a ridge on the profile and mine is flat in the same area.

Oops just checked my key again it is definitely a HV key and not a AH as previously stated (sorry). Although the HV stamp on the key is the other way round to the one shown on here, if that makes sense.
 
When i ordered new lock dowels from vw they do not ask what key i had so both types should fit.

I have re locked my daughters car before and had no problems, the dowels just depend on the outline of the key.

Although some one with more knowledge may know different.

its a HV key, you can tell by the extra groove up the middle of the blade on the side. AH is later profile came in around mk2 era, basically identical to HV too just doesnt have the line.

both blades will fit either type lock too so it really makes no odds at the end of the day

edit: if anyone is interested I just checked and the HV profile was dropped some time around November 1986

your key is AH, if you pm me the chassis number i can probably find out what it SHOULD have, if you really care that much

ah if yours is an 83 as per your sig it should have HV keys, but as i say AH still fit the extra groove down the side doesnt actually do anything (on mk1 locks anyway)

Purchased two Hv Keys. Spent last night stripping locks and re-greasing dowels. Hours of fun!

As a side note I've decided to Stick with my engine but perhaps whack a 2 litre bottom end on it. Loom will therefore remain in standard trim ;-)
Looking for a low mileage 2 litre bottom end now!
