where do you do your projects?

I really fancy a mk1 as a project. However There isnt much space where i live. We have a garage but its pretty much full with stuff we need so cant really fit a car in there. Our drive fits 2 cars but there are already 2 cars on it. Have a back garden but nowhere to get it in there

now i know some people take their cars to pros to do and probably do a better job but if you are an amateur where do you do yours if its not on your drive/garden?

I wouldnt like to think of leaving my car in some garage miles away and can you even work on them in front of them?

i take my car to work,or do jobs in the garage where its stored,its walking distance from my house and where i work so its ideal

I squeeze whatever I'm doing on the drive - or take to Crazyquiffs for bigger jobs..

I think a lot depends on available funds - your own circumstances etc tho

For me it all depends on the available funds since i am not that good with tools

I do mine in my grandads workshop/garage.  I know some people have asked local barns if they can store their car in them.

My mk1 was entirly rebuilt in a unit on a farm; me and a freind go halves on the rent so it works out reasonably cheap compared with the benefits of having a huge amount of storeage and space to work 8)

I appreciate though that not everybody can afford such a luxury, but it worked out well for me and is the only way I would/could have done a resto project

Your lucky mate… I got told off once for fixing my van in the car park.
Mind you it took the best part of 2 months. It was an engine change

Hmm, I've just started a bare shell resto in the designated parking behind my house :s

You have a garage mate so start using it for the car!

My garage was fill of crap once so I bought a shed, constructed it in an afternoon and shipped all the junk into that. The next day I threw all the proper junk in the back of the car and drove it to the dump. Cleaned the garage when I got back and slotted my car in.

I suggest you do the same mate, having your car in the garage is brilliant!

If there's definitely no way of using the garage, what about parking one of the two driveway cars on the street for the duration of the project? Depending how much you treasure them!    Then your project can stay in front of the garage. Although, I don't know what your street's like in terms of space availability or if it's a rat-run etc?

My folks garage was full of crap for over 12 years, but when I got my mk1 I got to work and cleaned up all the junk.  Having the garage is great and now I almost cant sleep If i know my car is parked outside, especially if its raining  :cry: .  
Get the garage empy mate, shed sounds like a great idea.  As long as theres nothing important in the garage, i.e its one of your kids bedrooms, lol

Same story as a few people… parents garage was full of crap… a full day of hard work and a boot sale the following day and I know have mine in the garage with tools in their place and everything else in it's place too… try to keep it tidy and put things away at the end of each day.  Otherwise it feels like a tip and you won't feel motivated or you'll feel like it's cluttered.

im stilll at the parents house so its all their crap. I had a multigym in it but sold that but then they bought a bike but never use it so thats just stuck in there. Theres like a shelf/wardrobe type thing that holds most of the items just the floor is packed. COuld clean the floor of all the crap and a car would fit in there and just wheel it out to do stuff on.

There is space in the street for them to park a car and on weekends there is normally only 1 car on the drive as my sister has horses so is out most of the day.

I'd go for the garage clear out, if there's any glimmer of hope! Even if you have to store some junk in your bedroom, it'll be worth it. It's the best way by far! Just tell your parents that at least that way your car will be out of their way and everyone else can park as normal!  :wink:

There is space in the garden in the corner where its been paved but getting the car in would mean knocking a garden wall down and manouvering past a lamp post to get it in. also wouldnt really want to leave it outside while its been working on :/

I also have no experience of doing a a resto or project and i know you'l say its all a learning curve but sometimes id think id like someone proper to do it.

I've done all the work on my car on the drive, just put a car cover over it every time I'm done and its fine. Although i haven't done anything to extreme to my car, such as a full strip and rebuild but when I bought her it had no windscreen and the car cover was fine and she stayed dry.
Garage isn't a option for me as my parents have a trailer tent they bought and only used twice.   :evil:
Uni in september to do a motorpsport engineering course and on weekend you can use the uni workshops, Can't wait they are like a surgery, white floors, walls, loads of space and all the tools i need.
